Author: Balmiki Prasad Singh
Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA
ISBN:
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 402
Book Description
This book propounds the concept of Bahudha-an eternal reality or continuum, a dialogue of harmony, and peaceful living. It refutes widely publicized ideas about the clash of civilizations and explains how the Bahudh? approach recognizes the distinction between plural societies and pluralism, an inevitable ingredience of democratic societies. One of the lessons of 9/11 is that we are living in an inter-dependent world. The author argues that in these times of unprecedented change, old doctrines have to be transcended, and the language of dialogue needs to be reconstructed. The answer to terrorism lies in respect for human rights, and other cultures and value systems. This will go a long way in facilitating and enhancing dialogue processes eventually leading to a harmonious society and a peaceful world.

Another Asia
Author: Rustom Bharucha
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0199087822
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 324
Book Description
The book weaves through an intricate tapestry of ideas relating to pan-Asianism, nationalism, cosmopolitanism, and friendship, and positions the early modernist tensions of the period within—and against—the spectre of a unified Asia that concealed considerable political differences. The book draws on pan-Asian works such as The Ideals of the East and The Awakening of the East, in counterpoint to Tagore's radical Nationalism. The book, offering new insights into the ways in which the Orient travelled within and beyond Asia stimulated by emergent modes of vernacular cosmopolitanism, will appeal to students and scholars of cultural studies, South Asian postcolonial literature, literary theory, and performance studies, as well as general readers.

Kashmir’s Contested Pasts
Author: Chitralekha Zutshi
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0199089361
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 301
Book Description
A pioneering and comprehensive study of the historical imagination in Kashmir, this book explores the conversations between the ideas of Kashmir and the ideas of history taking place within Kashmir’s multilingual historical tradition. Analysing the deep linkages among Sanskrit, Persian, and Kashmiri narratives, Kashmir’s Contested Pasts contends that these traditions drew on and influenced each other to imagine Kashmir as far more than simply an unsettled territory or a tourist paradise. By offering a historically grounded reflection on the memories, narrative practices, and institutional contexts that have informed, and continue to inform, imaginings of Kashmir and its past, the book suggests new ways of understanding the debates over history, territory, identity, and sovereignty that shape contemporary South Asia.

Drowned and Dammed
Author: Rohan D'Souza
Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA
ISBN: 9780199469130
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 290
Book Description
This book explores the idea and practice of flood control and argues that this is a part of a political agenda, deeply implicated in the social, economic, and political calculations of capitalism in general and colonialism in particular. It argues for a comprehensive reconsideration of the debate on the colonial environmental watershed, its hydraulic legacy, and questions contemporary enthusiasm for flood control in post-independent India. The author argues that the British assembled and deployed the idea and practice of flood control in order to secure their presence in the Orissa Delta. It was principally a political project deeply implicated in the social, economic, and political calculations of capitalism in general and colonialism in particular. Through the function of flood control, colonial rule sought to organize systems of land revenue, institute capitalist private property, and shape the region's hydrology with physical infrastructure such as embankments, canal networks, and inevitably the Hirakud Dam. In seeking to dominate the delta's many rivers, colonial capitalism brought about an unprecedented ecological rupture by transforming the Orissa Delta from a flood-dependent agrarian regime to a flood-vulnerable landscape. This ecological rupture revealed the particularities of colonial capitalism in its relationships with the natural world.
