Book Description
Bacterial Energetics deals with bacterial energetics and the molecular basis of how ions move between and within energy-transducing molecules. Topics covered range from respiration-driven proton pumps and primary sodium pumps to light-driven primary ionic pumps, bacterial transport ATPases, and bacterial photosynthesis. Sodium-coupled cotransport and ion-exchange systems in prokaryotes are also considered. This volume is comprised of 17 chapters and begins with an analysis of the pumps and processes that establish electrochemical ion gradients across bacterial membranes, followed by a discussion on the major types of bioenergetic work that utilize these gradients. The energetics of periplasmic transport systems, chemolithotrophs, methanogens, and protein insertion and translocation into or across membranes are also examined, along with bioenergetics in extreme environments such as high-pressure and high-temperature environments; energetic problems of bacterial fermentations; energetics of bacterial motility; and energetics of the bacterial phosphotransferase system in sugar transport and the regulation of carbon metabolism. This book should be of interest to molecular biologists and biochemists.

Book Description
The reviews in this volume deal with questions of the mechanisms of pathogenesis and with organisms that have only recently been extensively studied on the molecular level.**The introductory section presents an overview of pathogenesis, emphasizing common elements and genetic mechanisms of regulation and a review on the population genetics of bacterial pathogenesis. The second section deals with the regulation of synthesis of surface components and their role in the colonization of the host and/or of the host immune systems. The third section covers the invasion and intracellular growth of facultative and obligate intracellular parasites. The last section is devoted to studies of the role of bacterial toxic products in pathogenesis.

Book Description
The Bacteria, A Treatise on Structure and Function, Volume VIII: Archaebacteria is divided into three major parts and is further subdivided into several chapters. Each part deals with a specific area of study regarding archaebacteria. Part I tackles the biochemical diversity and ecology of archaebacteria, while Part II discusses translation apparatus of these organisms. The last part focuses on archaebacteria's general molecular characteristics. Generally, the physiological, morphological, ecological, and molecular aspects of the archaebacteria are discussed in this volume. This book also covers a historical distinction between prokaryote-eukaryote and the simultaneous development of archaebacteria. This book is a recommended reference for biologists and scientists who are interested in the unique characteristics of archaebacteria as a very special type of bacteria. These organisms provide a "new world for thermophilic organisms and at the same time make experts reexamine their idea of prokaryotes. Their relationship to eukaryotes leads people to believe that archaebacteria are truly a "new kingdom of organisms.

Book Description
Study of the phenomena of bacterial adhesion to surfaces has accelerated considerably over the past 10 to 15 years. During this period, microbiologists have become increasingly aware that attachment to a substratum influences considerably the activities and structures of microbial cells. Moreover, in many cases attached communities of cells have important effects on their substratum and the surrounding environment. Such phenomena are now known to be important in plant and animal hosts, water and soil ecosystems, and man-made structures and industrial processes. Much work on microbial adhesion in the early 1970s was descriptive. Those studies were important for detecting and describing the phenomena of bacterial adhesion to substrata in various environments; the findings have been presented in numerous recently published, excellent books and reviews. In some studies, attempts were made to elucidate some funda mental principles controlling adhesion processes in different environments containing a variety of microorganisms. Common threads have been observed occasionally in different studies. Taken as a whole, however, the information has revealed that many disparate factors are involved in adhesion processes. Whether a particular microorganism can adhere to a certain substratum depends on the properties of the microbial strain itself and on charac teristics of the substratum and of the environment.
