Book Description
Excerpt from Bacon's Dial in Shakespeare: A Compass-Clock Cipher This book tries to show that a cipher designed by Francis Bacon, and based on the union of a clock and compass in Dial form, exists in the First Folio of Shakespeare, printed in 1623. The Dial cipher is used as a literary framework for the plays, and is closely associated with the finest passages and allusions. It does not displace Baconian evidence already brought forward by others, and it does strengthen the force of many visible acrostics in the text, by showing their placements as they tally on the Dial chart. So far as I can find out, the Dial cipher has not been observed in any way before this, and therefore I am not able to give credit to some possible and unknown decipherer, who may long ago have seen it dimly. But to a few people here at Miami University, who have helped me, I may give my hearty thanks: to President and Mrs. Raymond Mollyneaux Hughes, whose point of view is always sympathetic and forward-looking; to Professor J. Belden Dennison for discriminating criticism during the progress of the cipher-tracking and for reading the manuscript; and to my husband, Professor Frank Lowry Clark, without whose steady cooperation and insistent scholarly method this book could not have been at all. Book Description
Think you know Shakespeare? Think again . . . Was a real skull used in the first performance of Hamlet? Were Shakespeare's plays Elizabethan blockbusters? How much do we really know about the playwright's life? And what of his notorious relationship with his wife? Exploring and exploding 30 popular myths about the great playwright, this illuminating new book evaluates all the evidence to show how historical material—or its absence—can be interpreted and misinterpreted, and what this reveals about our own personal investment in the stories we tell.
