Book Description
This story takes place in the mountains of Eastern Kentucky. A man name George moved back to Kentucky after being gone for about twenty years. But when he came back he had three kids with him. And those kids didn’t know any thing about being in the mountains, because they had never been here before. As far as that goes they had never been to any mountains before. But they was about to find out what it was really like to be country kids for the first time in their lives. George came back and found them a house and it needed some work on it so he decided to fix it up, and the kids were going to help him. His oldest boy was Charlie and he was ten years old, and he had two girls Mary and Martha. Now Mary she wasn’t too bad for getting into things which she was only eight year old. But now Martha she was something else, she was seven years old and got into anything she could, she makes poor old George a nervous wreck some time, because he never knows where she is at. He depends on Charlie to help him out a lot with Martha, because he has to work around the house trying to get it fixed up for them to live in. Charlie helps him as much as he can. But since he is only ten years old he can only do so much, but he does a good job watching her as much as he can. And believe me she is a hand full some time. Georges wife got killed in a car wreck a couple years before they came back home. So George was trying to get the kids and him self back in order, because they had all kinds of memories their, and he had to get away from that place It was driving him nuts and he needed a change in things, so he thought he would just bring the kids back home where he came from, and that place was Harlan county, Kentucky.

Book Description
"America, home of the brave and the free" This is a well-deserved description of America, but it hardly describes the complexity of our great nation. Describing America would be like describing a large, moving picture that is constantly changing. Each of its many components is different than all the others. To understand America one would have to understand every individual, in every culture, in every community. To leave out any piece of the big picture would distort America's image and deny the opportunity to know America itself. This book gives the reader a piece of the big picture that represents a bygone era. As a nation, we have made a lot of progress over the years and we can be proud of our accomplishments, but we should remember, our roots are the foundation of our success. Go back in time with the author to relive the old stories just as they happened in the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s in rural Arkansas. Experience the humor, nostalgia, and the tragedy of a bygone era. Each reader will experience something different, but will come away enlightened having enjoyed these glimpses of a simpler time.

Book Description
Continuous prosperity can be within our grasp provided we institute the simple economic reform fully documented in these pages. This is what this book promises Most readers will get a tax break Absolutely no taxes on produced things All land-sites would be used productively No diminution at all in government revenues It sounds almost too good to be true, but these four benefits have already occurred whenever it has been tried in actual practice. This is important - a proposal must be not only simple and logical, but tested. Prospective readers should know that there is a veritable mountain of empirical evidence proving each of these four points see chapter three. Much more hard empirical evidence is available, but uppermost in the author's mind was the readability of this book. Heavy subject, light treatment. You be the judge. If this simple proposal is not enacted, then America and the other democracies in the world will slowly tax themselves into "benevolent" dictatorship (no doubt still called democracy) and socialism (probably called compassion). It's happening already. Free enterprise can't work without it and will soon disappear. You should know that literally hundreds of well-known historical figures and urban experts have endorsed this proposal see chapter five. You could know what they know? To find out what this proposal is, you will have to read the book. Suffice it to say here that there is a good tax that actually promotes the economy, even if the revenue it produces is thrown away! If this book's proposal can accomplish the above four benefits, this book then is truly epochal. The proposal becomes the most important idea since the beginning of human history. Simplicity and readability these have been the watchwords of the author while writing this book. He has not found it necessary to obfuscate. It has been his primary intention to make this book not only vitally important but a joy to read no jargon allowed.

Book Description
In The Gaithers and Southern Gospel, Ryan P. Harper examines songwriters Bill and Gloria Gaither's Homecoming video and concert series--a gospel music franchise that, since its beginning in 1991, has outperformed all Christian and much secular popular music on the American music market. The Homecomings represent "southern gospel." Typically that means a musical style popular among white evangelical Christians in the American South and Midwest, and it sometimes overlaps in style, theme, and audience with country music. The Homecomings' nostalgic orientation--their celebration of "traditional" kinds of American Christian life--harmonize well with southern gospel music, past and present. But amidst the backward gazes, the Homecomings also portend and manifest change. The Gaithers' deliberate racial integration of their stages, their careful articulation of a relatively inclusive evangelical theology, and their experiments with an array of musical forms demonstrate that the Homecoming is neither simplistically nostalgic, nor solely "southern." Harper reveals how the Gaithers negotiate a tension between traditional and changing community norms as they seek simultaneously to maintain and expand their audience as well as to initiate and respond to shifts within their fan base. Pulling from his field work at Homecoming concerts, behind the scenes with the Gaithers, and with numerous Homecoming fans, Harper reveals the Homecoming world to be a dynamic, complicated constellation in the formation of American religious identity.

Book Description
The last the boy Papa saw of his Momma, she was galloping away on her horse Precious in the saddle her father took from a dead Mexican officer after the Battle of San Jacinto, fleeing from his Daddy, Old Karl, a vicious, tight-fisted horse trader. Momma’s flight sets Papa on a relentless quest to find her that thrusts him and his scrappy little dog Fritz into adventures all across the wild and woolly Hill Country of Central Texas, down to Mexico, and even into the realm of the ghostly “Shimmery People.” In The Devil’s Backbone, master storyteller Bill Wittliff takes readers on an exciting journey through a rough 1880s frontier as full of colorful characters and unexpected turns of events as the great American quest novel Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Wittliff grew up listening to stories and memories like these in his own family, and in this imaginative novel, they come to vivid life, creating an engrossing story of a Texas Huck Finn that brims with folk wisdom and sly humor. A rogue’s gallery of characters thwart and aid Papa’s path—Old Karl, hell-bent on bringing the boy back to servitude on his farm, and Herman, Papa’s brother who’s got Old Karl’s horse-trading instincts and greed; Calley Pearsall, an enigmatic cowboy with “other Fish to Fry” who might be an outlaw or a trustworthy “o’Amigo”; o’Jeffey, a black seer who talks to the spirits but won’t tell Papa what she has divined about his Momma; Mister Pegleg, a three-legged coyote with whom Papa forms a poignant, nearly tragic friendship; the “Mexkins” Pepe and Peto and their father Old Crecencio, whose longing for his lost family is as strong as Papa’s; and blind Bird, a magical “blue baby” who can’t see with his eyes but who helps other people see what they hold in their hearts. Papa’s adventures draw him ever nearer to a mysterious cave that haunts his dreams—an actual cave that he discovers at last in the canyons of the Devil’s Backbone—but will he find Momma before Old Karl finds him?
