The advent of the high-speed computer with its enormous storage capabilities enabled statisticians as well as researchers from the different topics of life sciences to apply mul tivariate statistical procedures to large data sets to explore their structures. More and more, methods of graphical representation and data analysis are used for investigations. These methods belong to a topic of growing popUlarity, known as "exploratory data analysis" or EDA. In many applications, there is reason to believe that a set of objects can be clus tered into subgroups that differ in meaningful ways. Extensive data sets, for example, are stored in clinical cancer registers. In large data sets like these, nobody would ex pect the objects to be homogeneous. The most commonly used terms for the class of procedures that seek to separate the component data into groups are "cluster analysis" or "numerical taxonomy". The origins of cluster analysis can be found in biology and anthropology at the beginning of the century. The first systematic investigations in cluster analysis are those of K. Pearson in 1894. The search for classifications or ty pologies of objects or persons, however, is indigenous not only to biology but to a wide variety of disciplines. Thus, in recent years, a growing interest in classification and related areas has taken place. Today, we see applications of cluster analysis not only to. biology but also to such diverse areas as psychology, regional analysis, marketing research, chemistry, archaeology and medicine.

Dem stehen Einschränkungen entgegen, die schon in den letzten Jahrzehnten diskutiert wurden, aber nichts an Aktualität verloren haben: Computergestützte Codierung kann im Gegensatz zu menschlichen Codierern keinen Kontext bei den Codierentscheidungen berücksichtigen, erkennt Doppeldeutigkeiten nicht und bleibt so der impliziten Komponente von Medieninhalten weitestgehend verschlossen. Vor diesem Hintergrund stellen sich die Autoren die Frage, welche Probleme durch die technologischen Weiterentwicklungen der letzten Jahre gelöst und welche Herausforderungen dazugekommen sind. Allerdings wird der Bogen noch etwas weiter gespannt und Bezug genommen auf das kontinuierliche Voranschreiten der Digitalisierung: Nicht nur die Frage wird berücksichtigt, wie automatisiert inhaltsanalytische Daten gewonnen werden können, sondern auch, welche Herausforderungen durch neue Medienangebote an die Inhaltsanalyse gestellt werden.

The "raison d'etre" of hierarchical dustering theory stems from one basic phe nomenon: This is the notorious non-transitivity of similarity relations. In spite of the fact that very often two objects may be quite similar to a third without being that similar to each other, one still wants to dassify objects according to their similarity. This should be achieved by grouping them into a hierarchy of non-overlapping dusters such that any two objects in ~ne duster appear to be more related to each other than they are to objects outside this duster. In everyday life, as well as in essentially every field of scientific investigation, there is an urge to reduce complexity by recognizing and establishing reasonable das sification schemes. Unfortunately, this is counterbalanced by the experience of seemingly unavoidable deadlocks caused by the existence of sequences of objects, each comparatively similar to the next, but the last rather different from the first.

V. took place at the Universitat Augsburg from April 10 to 12, 1989, with the' local organization by the Lehrstuhl fUr Mathematische Me thoden der Wirtschaftswissenschaften. The wide ranged subject of the conference Conceptual and Numerical Analysis of Data was obliged to indicate the variety of the concepts of data and information as well as the manifold methods of analysing and structuring. Based on the received announcements of papers four sections have been arranged: 1. Data Analysis and Classification: Basic Concepts and Methods 2. Applications in Library Sciences, Documentation and Information Sciences 3. Applications in Economics and Social Sciences 4. Applications in Natural Sciences and Computer Sciences This classification doesn't separate strictly, but it shows that theo retic and applying researchers of most different disciplines were disposed to present a paper. In 60 survey and special lectures the speakers reported on developments in theory and applications en couraging the interdisciplinary dialogue of all participants. This volume contains 42 selected papers grouped according to the four sections. Now we give a short insight into the presented papers. x Several problems of concept analysis, cluster analysis, data analysis and multivariate statistics are considered in 18 pa pers of section 1.
