Book Description
A handwritten folded lettersheet with bi-colored (red and blue) patriotic stationery. The author, A.F. Brooks, writes from Marion [Ohio]: "I am very well, considering that in less than a week I have sat up all night with corpses; one a young lady about fifteen who died of consumption, and the other a strong man, killed in his prime by the falling in of a well." He was "at present engaged in writing the 'Great Man's Record' or the lives of notable men. it will probably be a year before it is completed but if I live it shall be finished." He notes, "I was very well pleased with your description of Marcia, but I would like to know the shape and size of her head, for I am a phrenologist. Light hair and blue eyes indicate a gentle disposition and literary turn of mind a high broad forehead denotes a giant intellect, and wide between the ears shows the soldier." Handwritten in pencil at the head of the letter, in a different hand: "Relative of James Balley [or Battey?]."
