The Introduction then offers an overview of printed paper collectables which were the ancestors of postcards. These precursors include, for instance, the carte-de-visite, greeting cards, trading cards, and printed envelopes. Then the focus becomes more refined, examining the emergence of the specifically literary postcard, a category which includes, of course, portraits of authors, but, in addition, images of their homes, schools, graves, statues, relatives, lovers, monuments, as well as depictions of characters from their books.

Book Description
Authorized Images Famous Authors Seen Through Antique and Vintage Postcards: James Fenimore Cooper, Edgar Allan Poe, William Cullen Bryant In any census of the pioneers of American literature, these three will always have a position of honour. Cooper's Leatherstocking novels (e.g., Last of the Mohicans) were the first USA fictions to find a wide readership in Europe. Poe's reputation took longer to build, but posthumously his star rose considerably, forcing his compatriots to pay greater attention to his work and applaud his genius. Bryant is less read now than he was–but his influence once was huge—not merely in the world of books, but in changing the face of his beloved New York City (think Bryant Park or the Metropolitan Museum of Art, both of which he created). Pioneering postcards of all three men were plentiful and are on abundant display in this volume, with explanatory text and informative captions.

Book Description
Authorized Images: Famous Authors Seen Through Antique and Vintage Postcards F. Scott Fitzgerald, Oren Arnold, Sholem Aleichem, Ernest Hemingway: Two of this quartet are obviously giants of American literature; the other two had a substantial readership during their heyday. Of these latter two, Aleichem is moderately known beyond the sphere of those who read Yiddish due to the success of the Broadway musical Fiddler on the Roof based on his work. Though Hemingway was a Nobel laureate and a world famous celebrity, he spent most of his life out of the public eye, feeling no need to pose for postcard publishers. Fitzgerald had a more troubled life, with the result that he, too, has few vintage cards attached to his name. What examples there of both men are included in this volume.

Book Description
Authorized Images: Famous Authors Seen Through Antique and Vintage Postcards Walt Whitman, Emily Dickinson, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow: American postcard publishers were generally very good in honouring their nation's most celebrated authors by providing buyers with a plethora of picture postcards featuring busts of the writers or images of their homes or other views somehow related to their lives and careers. This was especially true of Longfellow who is represented in this volume by almost 300 different cards. The exception was Emily Dickinson who, being a famous recluse, was almost invisible from the postcard world. The examples in this book are the only ones known related to her from the pioneering decades of postcards.

Book Description
Authorized Images: Famous Authors Seen Through Antique and Vintage Postcards Jane Austen, George Eliot, Charlotte Bronte, Anne Bronte: Women writers in the Victorian and Edwardian eras were sometimes widely read but almost never seen or heard. Book Description
Authorized Images Famous Authors Seen Through Antique and Vintage Postcards: Alexandre Dumas, père and Gustave Flaubert The author of The Count of Monte Cristo and of The Three Musketeers has always been in print in both his native France and abroad, resulting in hundreds of unique postcards reflecting deep appreciation of his life and work were om sale in the early years of the 20th century. Flaubert, most known for his novel Madame Bovary, operated on a higher plane but still managed to attract a large following, perhaps partly because of the sexual and moral notoriety attached to his best-known work. Parisian printers honoured both with a myriad of handsome cards, a broad selection of which are presented in this volume, in the company of biographical prose and full captions.

Book Description
Authorized Images Famous Authors Seen Through Antique and Vintage Postcards: Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson, Franz Grillparzer While hardly a household name in the English-speaking world, Bjørnson was—and remains—an immensely important literary figure in the Nordic world, a rival in popularity to his Norwegian compatriot Hendrik Ibsen. Grillparzer, likewise, though little known outside Europe, was widely admired in his native Austria. As a result, postcards of both writers were available in vast quantities during the Golden Age, and a healthy assortment of examples are presented throughout this book, in tandem with informative text about each author.
