Book Description
Atrial fibrillation (AF) refers to an abnormal heart condition that is characterized by the irregular and rapid beating of the atria. Certain risk factors associated with it include valvular heart disease, high blood pressure, cardiomyopathy, heart failure and congenital heart disease. Factors such as diabetes, excessive alcohol intake, smoking, thyrotoxicosis, obesity, sleep apnea, etc. can lead to atrial fibrillation. It is diagnosed by checking the pulse or by an electrocardiogram (ECG). The principal pathologic change due to atrial fibrillation is the progressive fibrosis of the atria. This triggers a chain of events, which leads to atrial remodeling and fibrosis along with the loss of muscle mass in the atrium. Management of AF aims to prevent circulatory instability and stroke. Anticoagulants, cardioversion, beta-blockers and non-dihydropyridine calcium channel blockers are recommended to control the heart rate. This book elucidates the concepts and innovative models around prospective developments with respect to the management of atrial fibrillation. It presents researches and studies performed on the pathogenesis of atrial fibrillation by experts across the globe. The readers would gain knowledge that would broaden their perspective about atrial fibrillation.

Book Description
Atrial Fibrillation: A Multidisciplinary Approach to Improving Patient Outcomes, provides a current and comprehensive update on path physiology, epidemiology, management strategies of rate control, pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic approaches to rhythm control, risk stratification for stroke and bleeding, anticoagulant therapy, and left atrial occlusion devices. The contributions by experienced internists, cardiologists, electrophysiologists, surgeons, anesthesiologists, pharmacists, internists, nurse practitioners, and nurse educators provide a unique perspective. Case studies of paroxysmal, persistent, and permanent atrial provide clinical context incorporating recent evidence and best practices for the multidisciplinary approach to improving patient outcomes. “The physician is inundated with information, and needs all of this to be reduced and summarized in a readable form. This cannot be done simply by technical editing because it involves real expertise to pick the “jewels for the crown.” This has been accomplished so well by the authors who have contributed to this book. The result is a gem — a source of enlightenment for all the many clinicians who care for patients suffering from this ubiquitous arrhythmia. I read it from cover to cover in about three hours, and learned much which is new and useful to my practice. It is the best small book that I know dealing with this big subject.” -From the foreword by A. John Camm, MD

Book Description
For many years, there has been a great deal of work done on chronic congestive heart failure while acute heart failure has been considered a difficult to handle and hopeless syndrome. However, in recent years acute heart failure has become a growing area of study and this is the first book to cover extensively the diagnosis and management of this complex condition. The book reflects the considerable amounts of new data reported and many new concepts which have been proposed in the last 3-4 years looking at the epidemiology, diagnostic and treatment of acute heart failure.

Book Description
Filling a gap in the literature, this all-encompassing reference explores the epidemiology, mechanisms, and pathophysiology of atrial fibrillation and compiles the latest diagnostic and treatment practices for patient care. The book summarizes the most recent advances in symptom relief, drug development, device management, and long-term control of heart rhythm abnormalities and reviews the latest studies on the prevention of stroke and other thromboembolic events in patients with valvular and nonvalvular atrial fibrillation. Finally, it offers new strategies to improve the therapy and outcomes of patients suffering from the myriad of complications associated with atrial fibrillation.

Book Description
Until recently, the cellular basis for sudden death, the BrugadaSyndrome, has largely remained an unknown to modernarrhythmologists and cardiologists, particularly in the absence ofany structural heart disease. Detailed observations of age-groups,especially the young, families and populations where sudden deathfrequently occurs, and improved understanding of its contributoryfactors and mechanisms are, however, showing the way forward. This addition to the Clinical Approaches to Tachyarrhythmias(CATA) Series, written by the investigators who discovered andprobed the Brugada Syndrome, discusses the history, etiology, pathology and clinical manifestations of sudden death. Fromdiagnosis, prognosis, to therapeutic approaches using the latest incathater ablation techniques, electrophysiological surgery, andgenetic appraisal, the work is a testimony to the author'sinvestigation. Using clinical cases in Thailand and Laos, theyfurther unravel the syndrome's molecular mechanisms, studyingrelated syndromes, such as the long-QT syndrome, infant death, andarryhthmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy. By being informed of the electrophysiological abnormalities thatcontribute to familial and genetic diseases, physicians, cardiologists and all those who care for patients with cardiacarrhythmias will be better able to identify and treat patients inwhom the Brugada Syndrome may strike next.
