Book Description
assume vivid astro focus (avaf for short) is an artists' collective whose members prefer not to let the public know their names. Their multiple authorship both comments on and evades the cult of personality--it is ostensibly designed to set their art squarely in the public eye, without gossipy biographical distractions, but it has received a lot of attention itself. The avaf works collected here are largely site-specific and in multiple media, including spatial interventions, projections, music programs, drawings and installations, stickers, masks and T-shirts. Motifs of diverse provenance are sampled and mixed, and sources range from Tibetan prayer rugs to soft-core porn. Among bits of pop culture and everyday aesthetics, historical and spiritual art, an aesthetic of appropriation and collage emerges. Alice-in-Wonderland-esque environments, naked people, drag queens, flowers, butterflies and birds of paradise lead to a sensory overload that seems to explode the limits of perception. avaf has recently shown at Tate Liverpool, and was a standout at the 2004 Whitney Biennial.

Book Description
"Artist book developed in collaboration between the artist Eli Sudbrack and designer and editor Maria Lago. The book is the avaf manifesto and an homage to brazilian concrete poetry, playing with words as images and representing the meanings through visual games. The artist works under a pseudonym, assume vivid astro focus (avaf). Since many years he has been playing with the avaf initials and creating new avafs (which are used as email signatures, titles of exhibitions and works). Friends and other people that interact with the artist often send him new avafs creating a “word bank”. For the typographical representation of these phrases, the choice was AVAF's font, inspired by Jenny Holzer’s “Truisms” that were displayed on large public electronic signs in the 1980’s, specially her insertions on Times Square LED signs. A political statement translated through a visual language that always inspired the artist’s work." -- Publisher's website.

Book Description
The past twenty years have seen a new generation of artists working together in small groups and large collectives to explore new avenues of art, design, performance, and commerce. In Come Together, author and visual artist Francesco Spampinato assembles an international roster of forty of today's most exciting and influential collectives, from design studios like Project Projects and political performance artists The Yes Men to flash mob provocateurs Improv Everywhere and the multimedia artists Assume Vivid Astro Focus. Alongside visual portfolios of their best work are in-depth interviews addressing each group's unique motivations, processes, and objectives. What emerges is a shared desire to turn viewers into producers and to use commercial mass-media strategies to challenge prevailing social, political, and cultural power structures. Come Together is an essential resource and inspiration for students, art lovers, and anyone interested in the cutting edge of visual culture.

Book Description
Tiré du site Internet d'Amazon.com (Vol. 1): "A culture's body image, as refracted through its art, will usually provide a more telling account of its preoccupations than the most explicit political art; it seems that cultural symptoms leak more readily into depictions of the body than into more overt statements. This is especially true in periods of heightened alienation, when the solitary figure gains poignancy, but bodies register their eras in many ways: the signifiers of opulence, imperialism, fashion, social decay, sexual convention and anxiety can all be readily inscribed onto the human form in art--and indeed, always have been. Fractured Figure projects our millennial moment as one of fragile bodies pitched against a restless, dysphasic backdrop, in which terrorism and global warming impinge as daily realities. It draws on the world-renowned contemporary collection of Dakis Joannou, who, in collaboration with Jeffrey Deitch, has previously organized shows such as Artificial Nature and Post Human, in which similar concerns have arisen. Here, in works by Chris Ofili, David Altmejd, Richard Prince, Urs Fischer, Pawel Althamer, Ashley Bickerton, Barnaby Furnas and others, the figure is shown as un-idealized and compellingly mortal--situated in a realm that we will immediately recognize as our own."
