The Shanghai basic education system has garnered significant attention since its extraordinary performance in the 2009 and 2012 Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), a global assessment of 15-year-olds’ educational abilities. Among the 65 participating economies in 2012, Shanghai-China ranked first on all three major domains of PISA, i.e. mathematics, reading, and science. Shanghai also stands out for having the world’s highest percentage of “resilient students†?, students from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds who emerge as top performers. Shanghai’s PISA story has generated intense discussions and diverse speculations in field of international educational development, and numerous studies have been done in the attempt to unravel the mystery. Missing from the picture however is a more comprehensive, systematic, in-depth, and objective rendition of the policies and practices of Shanghai basic education, benchmarked against others in key dimensions. This report presents an in-depth examination of how Shanghai scored highest in the areas of reading, science, and mathematics on PISA. It documents and benchmarks key policies in basic Shanghai education, provides evidence on the extent to which these policies have been implemented in schools, and explores how these policies have affected learning outcomes. The report uses PISA 2012 data to analyze Shanghai student achievement variation and to examine the extent school variables may be associated with the variation beyond family and student background. It also uses the World Bank’s Systems Approach for Better Education Results (SABER), an existing systems diagnostic and benchmarking tool, as an organizing framework and for data collection. School-based surveys and other existing research shed further light on educational impact and implementation. While the report attempts to adopt a systems approach, particular emphasis is placed on teachers, education financing, balancing autonomy and accountability, and student assessment.

All rights not granted by the above license are retained by the author. Abstract: Abstract The purpose of this research is to study hope among the Chinese primary students. A convenient sample of 712 primary students ranging from primary 4 to 6 responded to the survey questionnaire. Children Hope Scale (CHS; Snyder, Hoza et al., 1997), Self-descriptive Questionnaire 1 (SDQ 1; Marsh, 1988) and Academic Achievement Score (AAS) were used to study hope and its relationships with self-concept and academic achievement. One-way ANOVA analysis, correlation analysis, univariate tests, post hoc test and multiple regression analysis were conducted to examine hope among Chinese primary students and its relationships to self-esteem and academic achievement. The findings showed that female students statistically excelled male students in the CHS, SDQ 1 and AAS scores. More importantly, the findings indicated there was gender difference in hope among Chinese children. It questioned previous finding that there was no gender difference in the CHS. This contradictory finding implies that cultural factor plays a role in children's hope. Second, although CHS was successful in predicting academic achievement, the amount of the variance they explained was very small. Pathway failed to predict unique variance of academic achievement. These findings imply that cultural difference in attributing success may exist. Third, academic self-esteem was proven more powerful than CHS in predicting students' academic achievement. IIIImplications for research and practice in developmental guidance were discussed. This book provides a detailed account of an educational experiment in a middle school in Shanghai, China. The school, called Zhabei No. 8 Middle School (hereafter No. 8 School), is located in a run-down, lower working class district. Since the mid-1980s the school has experimented on an educational reform program called success education, aiming to help those at-risk students to be successful in school. This book illustrates how this educational experiment has been carried out and to identify experiences that could be learned by the international educational community. The book analyzes the critical role played by Principal Liu Jinghai, and particular attention is paid to the strategies adopted by the school to help enhance students’ self-esteem through integrating love and care throughout the school’s curriculum and activities. The pivotal roles played by teachers called “class directors” are meticulously studied, and efforts the school has made to collaborate with parents and the local community are examined. An ethnographic approach was used to gather data in this study. A combination of interviews, participant observation, and document analysis was applied to arrive at a systematic and complex understanding of this educational endeavor in China.
