Book Description
Physical fitness is a key component to performance in the fire service. The problem was Provo Fire & Rescue did not know what elements needed to be included in an effective physical fitness program. The purpose of this descriptive study was to identify the necessary aspects of a comprehensive and effective physical fitness program in order to increase the physical fitness level of Provo Fire & Rescue. The research questions were (a) what are the standards needing to be addressed in a fire department physical fitness program, (b) should physical fitness programs be mandatory or voluntary, (c) how do the physical demands of the job indicate a need for a physical fitness program? The data was gathered to answer the research questions via an extensive literature review, and a questionnaire sent to the members of Provo Fire & Rescue. The results showed a clear direction for Provo Fire & Rescue to advance their physical fitness program. Several professional organizations are asserting recommendations with regards to physical fitness. The National Fire Protection Association, International Association of Firefighters, and the International Association of Fire Chiefs standards on wellness were reviewed. There are seven recommendations made based on information from these and other organizations. These recommendations give the administration of Provo Fire & Rescue ample information to improve the overall health and wellness of the organization.

Book Description
With the specific requirement of physical fitness testing removed from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1001-1 standard and the general requirement added to the NFPA 1500 standard, many fire chiefs, firefighters and administrators are unsure what type physical fitness assessment to use. As a result of this, many fire chiefs have either not started a physical fitness assessment program or they are thinking about changing their present assessment program. The lack of guidance and information available on Physical Performance Assessments (PPA) and Physical Fitness Assessments (PFA) has made the problem of determining which assessment needs to be implemented very difficult.

Book Description
Cardiac arrest can strike a seemingly healthy individual of any age, race, ethnicity, or gender at any time in any location, often without warning. Cardiac arrest is the third leading cause of death in the United States, following cancer and heart disease. Four out of five cardiac arrests occur in the home, and more than 90 percent of individuals with cardiac arrest die before reaching the hospital. First and foremost, cardiac arrest treatment is a community issue - local resources and personnel must provide appropriate, high-quality care to save the life of a community member. Time between onset of arrest and provision of care is fundamental, and shortening this time is one of the best ways to reduce the risk of death and disability from cardiac arrest. Specific actions can be implemented now to decrease this time, and recent advances in science could lead to new discoveries in the causes of, and treatments for, cardiac arrest. However, specific barriers must first be addressed. Strategies to Improve Cardiac Arrest Survival examines the complete system of response to cardiac arrest in the United States and identifies opportunities within existing and new treatments, strategies, and research that promise to improve the survival and recovery of patients. The recommendations of Strategies to Improve Cardiac Arrest Survival provide high-priority actions to advance the field as a whole. This report will help citizens, government agencies, and private industry to improve health outcomes from sudden cardiac arrest across the United States.

Book Description
What if Adam and Eve Had a Diary? “He talks very little. Perhaps it is because he is not bright and is sensitive about it and wishes to conceal it. It is such a pity that he should feel so, for brightness is nothing. It is in the heart that the values lie. I wish I could make him understand that a loving good heart is riches, and riches is enough, and that without it intellect is poverty.” - Mark Twain, Eve's Diary Mark Twain’s short stories aren’t about his religious beliefs. In fact, the Diaries of Adam and Eve should be taken with a grain of salt as they are humorous and witty and describe in a unique way the relationship between two human beings, man and woman who eventually end up falling in love with each other. Book Description
This new IFSTA manual details the training required of Company Officers according to NFPA® 1021, Standard for Fire Officer Professional Qualifications, 2014 Edition. The manual is divided into two sections to make a clear distinction between the information needed for Fire Officer Level I and Fire Officer Level II. Both print and eBook formats are available. There is no shortage of issues that a company officer might face in the everyday operation of a fire company or unit. This manual addresses the wide range of topics and issues encountered by a company officer, from leadership and supervision to health and safety issues. Great attention was given to focus on the job performance requirements of NFPA® 1021. The fifth edition of Fire and Emergency Services Company Officer builds on the previous edition of the manual while presenting the material in a more concise manner to make it easier for students to read and instructors to teach. By merging related topics, the number of chapters was reduced from 32 in the fourth edition to 17 in the new manual while preserving the material related to the NFPA® standard. The number of appendices was reduced from 20 to 4 by removing information that can be found in other media. Along with reducing the volume of material from the fourth edition, the fifth edition of Fire and Emergency Services Company Officer offers several new features. The manual features a new look with IFSTA’s single-column format and upgraded and updated curriculum components. Learning activities are included to help instructors present the material to their students. Case Histories open each chapter to illustrate important lessons learned in the real world. Photographs, illustrations, and tables are included throughout the manual to illustrate key points and improve the overall instructional value of the material.
