Urbanization got an impetus during 1980s and 1990s due to advances in transportation and telecommunicationand further momentum was provided by globalization. During this period many Asian Countries experienced both economic boom and population increase. UN HABITAT (2006) pointed out that Asia and Africa will host largest urban population in 21st century and cities will continue to be sites of extreme inequality. It is feared that Asian cities may not be able to cope with the ongoing urbanization and urbanization of poverty further adds to the challenges. This edited volume addresses to the challenges thrown by urban poverty for sustainable cities in developing countries and also presents some strategies adopted in these countries to deal with these challenges. The volume contains seventeen articles which are divided into three sections. Section-1, entitled 'Urban Poverty in Developing Countries: Some Issues', contains five articles dealing with urban poverty and delineates certain issues related to it. Section-II, entitled 'Urban Poverty in India: Empirical Reality', contains five articles which present the empirical situation of urban poverty in India. Section-III, entitled 'Urban poverty and Strategies for Sustainable Cities', anthologizes seven articles dealing with some strategies to grapple with the problem of urban poverty in developing countries and the outcome of these efforts. All these efforts to achieve sustainable cities are not producing desired results. Cities cannot be sustainable if rural areas, neighborhoods and communities are not sustainable. So focus must shift to these settlements as well.

Public transport in low-income Asian (LIA) cities fails to meet people’s mobility needs, generates high greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and worsens social exclusion. Following successful Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) projects in Bogota and Curitibá, LIA countries promoted BRT in their large to medium-sized cities. However, the political and institutional structure distinctive to LIA cities makes their implementation difficult. This book investigates policy tensions by examining the planning and attempted implementation of BRT projects, taking Bandung and Surabaya in Indonesia as case studies. It analyses BRT to understand how power and communication gaps in institutional relationships between different actors at multiple levels of governance create conflict, and concludes that top-down policies and funding mechanisms cause tension in intergovernmental relationships. It also found that BRT solutions generated socio-political tension arising from the socio-economic realities and local political dynamics that shaped city structure, mobility patterns and capacity in resolving conflicts. The superimposed BRT solution generated discursive tension because conflicting discourses were not aligned with local economic, social, and environmental issues. The book highlights the need to take into consideration the vital role of local social and political actors, institutions and planning processes as they respond to and shape policies that are imposed by higher levels.

Volume Three of the Classics of Comparative Policy Analysis, contains chapters concerned with "Regional Comparisons and Policy Analysis" – one of the most prevailing approaches in comparative public policy. Through the prism of inter-jurisdiction comparisons of similarities and variations, they address comparisons in specific policy sectors, governance or institutional constructs, and political regimes. The foci are, nevertheless, on those comparisons between countries or regions, which help to lesson-draw by identifying and understanding the variation in policy analysis and policy making that exists within or across regions. One benefit of regional comparisons is that it often allows studies to hold constant many variables, ranging from colonial legacy to federal systems, or from language to specific traditions, and more effectively isolate dependent variables.
