Role of Japan in Modern Chinese Art
Author: Joshua A. Fogel
Publisher: Univ of California Press
ISBN: 0520289846
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 503
Book Description
The modern histories of China and Japan are inexorably intertwined. Their relationship is perhaps most obvious in the fields of political, economic, and military history, but it is no less true in cultural and art history. Yet the traffic in artistic practices and practitioners between China and Japan remains an understudied field. In this volume, an international group of scholars investigates Japan’s impact on Chinese art from the mid-nineteenth century through the 1930s. Individual essays address a range of perspectives, including the work of individual Chinese and Japanese painters, calligraphers, and sculptors, as well as artistic associations, international exhibitions, the collotype production or artwork, and the emergence of a modern canon.

Epochs of Chinese Japanese Art, Vol. 1
Author: Ernest F. Fenollosa
Publisher: Forgotten Books

Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 402
Book Description
Excerpt from Epochs of Chinese Japanese Art, Vol. 1: An Outline History of East Asiatic Design With the publication of this book three years of continuous work upon a most complicated and difficult manuscript comes to an end. I have had assistance from scholars all over the world. Many months have been spent in Japan, where invaluable aid was given by artists and scholars who had been associated, several of them since the year 1880, with the arechæological researches and the study of Chinese and Japanese Art to which, shortly after his arrival in Japan, Ernest Fenollosa determined to devote his life. The original manuscript of this book, left as it was in hasty pencil writing, was little more than a rough draft of the finished work he intended to make of it. Many historical dates, the names of temples, Sanskrit and Chinese names, and even the full names of artists were often left a blank. Especially in the choice of illustrations has the work seemed, at times, beyond the grasp of any intelligence less than his. A full list of these was made out, but often the description consisted of a single word of identification known only to the writer. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work.
