These selections, reflective of the increase in the monographic literature on artists during the last ten years, are evidence of the activities of a larger number of art historians in more countries worldwide, of the increasingly diverse and ambitious exhibition programs of museums whose number has also increased dramatically, and also of a lively international art market and the attendant gallery activities. The selections of the first edition have been reviewed, errors have been corrected and important new editions and reprints have been noted. The second edition contains 278 names of artists not represented in the first edition.

This edited collection gives voice to neglected public intellectuals in the arts, humanities, and journalism in South Africa who gave voice and presence to those who have been marginalized and silenced in South African history Edward Said described a public intellectual as someone who uses accessible language to address a designated public on matters of social and political significance. The essays in Public Intellectuals in South Africa apply this interpretive prism and activist principle to a South African context and tell the stories of well-known figures as well as some that have been mostly forgotten. They include Magema Fuze, John Dube, Aggrey Klaaste, Mewa Ramgobin and Koos Roets, alongside marginalized figures such as Elijah Makiwane, Mandisi Sindo, William Pretorius and Dr Thomas Duncan Greenlees. The artist Johannes Petrus Meintjes (19 May 1923 to 7 July 1980) was also a historian and author. Spanning a period of almost 40 years, his body of autobiographical work includes thirteen diaries. Considered Africana, Meintjes self-published the first four volumes (three Diaries and Jeugjare) through his Bamboesberg Publishers. His first diary entry was on 13 February 1941, while the last entry was recorded in 5 July 1980, two days prior to his death. The various diaries, published and unpublished, represent a collected work that tells the story of Johannes Meintjes’ life as an artist and author. This includes inscriptions on people he met, comments about political events as well as matters of faith. In this English synopsis (424 pages, illustrated with examples of his artistic output) the compilers steered clear of deeply personal, nonsensical or malicious comments, while toning down accounts of his extensive social activities. There are references to health or financial issues that affected Meintjes’ creativity and the experience of pain and sadness is also touched upon briefly where appropriate. In the end, it was Meintjes’ entry on 30 January 1964, ‘When I started on the Diary, I never realised that it would become my monument. If it were ever to appear as a single volume, who knows, it can be cut drastically’, that served as catalyst and inspiration culminating in the Afrikaans publication of the Johannes Meintjes Dagboeke launched at the Stellenbosch University Museum in 2023, a century after his birth. Publishing a synopsis of all thirteen diaries into one single volume was a project that took more than ten years. It was spearheaded by Lydia de Waal (a previous Director of the Stellenbosch University Museum) and assisted by Kobus Opperman (the Johannes Meintjes Archivist). Associate Professor Emeritus at Stellenbosch University, Dr Edwin Hees, translated the document into English. Mr Bongani Mgijia, the Director of the Stellenbosch University Museum, graciously arranged for sponsoring this translation. Amanda Botha, seasoned arts journalist, ends the book with her valued conclusion ‘The Meintjes Diaries: Mirror and Reflection’. The English translation contains additional archival material kindly made available by the Meintjes family from their personal collection.

Whether it is being studied or critiqued, the art canon is usually understood as an authoritative list of important works and artists. This collection breaks with the idea of a singular, transcendent canon. Through provocative case studies, it demonstrates that the content of any canon is both historically and culturally specific and dependent on who is responsible for the canon’s production and maintenance. The contributors explore how, where, why, and by whom canons are formed; how they function under particular circumstances; how they are maintained; and why they may undergo change. Focusing on various moments from the seventeenth century to the present, the contributors cover a broad geographic terrain, encompassing the United States, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, Taiwan, and South Africa. Among the essays are examinations of the working and reworking of a canon by an influential nineteenth-century French critic, the limitations placed on what was acceptable as canonical in American textbooks produced during the Cold War, the failed attempt to define a canon of Rembrandt’s works, and the difficulties of constructing an artistic canon in parts of the globe marked by colonialism and the imposition of Eurocentric ideas of artistic value. The essays highlight the diverse factors that affect the production of art canons: market forces, aesthetic and political positions, nationalism and ingrained ideas concerning the cultural superiority of particular groups, perceptions of gender and race, artists’ efforts to negotiate their status within particular professional environments, and the dynamics of art history as an academic discipline and discourse.
