"At the beginning of World War II the French faced the German invasion with 4,360 modern combat aircraft and 790 new machines currently arriving from French and American factories each month. When the phony war finally ended, some 119 of 210 squadrons were ready for action on the north-eastern front. The others were reequipping or stationed in the French colonies. Of the 119 squadrons France could bring into action only one-fourth of the aircraft were battle-ready.With France overrun by June 1940, what remained of the French air force was either concentrated in the unoccupied zone or had been hastily redeployed to the colonies. Nonetheless, in retaliation for the British attack on the French fleet in Oran, French bombers, based in French Morocco, carried out retaliatory air raids over Gibraltar. The Armee de l'Air de Vichy was born and would fight to the best of its ability against the Free French's allies in theatres as distant as north-west Africa, Syria, Lebanon, Madagascar and the Far East. Not only would they take to the skies against the British and later the Americans, they would also willingly take part in aerial duels against Free French pilots.Only a handful of books have been written on French aircraft, but never has there been a complete history of the operations of the Vichy Air Force and its fratricidal war. Afin de conforter la place des armées dans la Nation et rester en phase avec les évolutions technologiques et sociétales, l’appareil de formation doit aujourd’hui poursuivre son ouverture vers les institutions civiles, tout en gardant ce qui constitue son ADN : développer chez ces hommes et femmes le sens de l’engagement au service des autres et du dépassement de soi. Les propositions des rapporteurs sont les suivantes : – augmenter, dans les écoles d’officiers, la proportion de places offertes aux étudiants ayant déjà accompli un premier parcours universitaire ; – encourager les grandes écoles militaires à décloisonner leurs cursus pour tendre vers des modèles d’écoles uniques, assorties d’un insigne commun ; – augmenter la proportion d’élèves-officiers effectuant un semestre de scolarité dans un autre établissement d’enseignement supérieur et accueillir, dans le même temps, une plus grande proportion d’étudiants issus de ces établissements ; – augmenter la proportion d’élèves-officiers effectuant un semestre de scolarité dans une académie militaire étrangère et accueillir, dans le même temps, une plus grande proportion de cadets issus de ces établissements ; – encourager les écoles militaires à adopter un statut d’établissement public à caractère scientifique, culturel et professionnel (EPSCP) ; – favoriser la création, dans chacune des armées, d’écoles à destination des élèves en situation d’échec scolaire, en y consacrant des moyens spécifiques ; – doter au plus vite les armées d’un outil complet de connaissance des coûts de l’appareil de formation ; – définir une méthodologie, commune aux trois armées, permettant de préparer et de développer des partenariats de formation avec les industriels ; – amplifier la féminisation des effectifs des cadres des écoles et des centres de recrutement pour promouvoir la mixité des choix de carrière des femmes.

Every day for nine months from September 1944 to the end of the war, young British, Commonwealth and Norwegian airmen flew from Banff aerodrome in northern Scotland in their Mosquitoes and Beaufighters to target the German U-Boats, merchantmen and freighters plying along the coast and in the fjords and leads of southwest Norway, encountering the Luftwaffe and flakships every step of the way. This Scottish strike wing fought in some of the bitterest and bloodiest attacks of the war, all at very low level and at close quarters. Their contribution to winning the war was crucial and while the cost in precious lives and equipment was in the same proportion as Bomber Command, they inflicted far greater damage to the enemy in relation to their losses. With Group Captain The Hon. Max Aitken, DSO DFC as station commander, Banff was eventually to become the base for a total of six Mosquito squadrons (including 235, 248 and 143), together with B Flight of the elite 333 Norwegian Squadron, and would team up on missions with the nearby Dallachy Beaufighter strike wing (404 RCAF, 455 RAAF, 489 RNZAF and 144 Squadrons). A Separate Little War, then, is a well researched and detailed history of a microcosm of Coastal Command. Supported by many photographs, maps and charts, the vast majority never published before, the author has drawn on the personal accounts of, amongst others, British and Norwegian pilots, ground crew and civilians which augment the official sources, to give a compelling, accurate and fascinating depiction of an aerodrome at war. This consequential work by a pioneer aviation historian fills a significant lacuna in the story of the defeat of France in May-June 1940 and more fully explains the Battle of Britain of July–October of that year and the influence it had on the Luftwaffe in the 1941 invasion of the USSR. Robin Higham approaches the subject by sketching the story and status of the three air forces--the Armée de l’Air, the Luftwaffe, and the Royal Air Force--their organization and preparation for their battles. He then dissects the the campaigns, their losses and replacement policies and abilities. He paints the struggles of France and Britain from both the background provided by his recent Two Roads to War: From Versailles to Dunkirk (NIP, 2012) and from the details of losses tabulated by After the Battle’s The Battle of Britain (1982, 2nd ed.) and Peter Cornwell’s The Battle of France Then and Now (2007), as well as in Paul Martin’s Invisible Vainqueurs (1990) and from the Luftwaffe summaries in the British National Archives Cabinet papers. One important finding is that the consumption and wastage was not nearly as high as claimed. The three air forces actually shot down only 19 percent of the number claimed. In the RAF case, in the summer of 1940, 44 percent of those shot down were readily repairable thanks to the salvage and repair organizations. This contrasted with the much lower 8 percent for the Germans and zero for the French. Brave as the aircrews may have been, the inescapable conclusion is that awareness of consumption, wastage, and sustainability were intimately connected to survival.
