Dear Readers: I have recently improved and updated this book! I hope you enjoy it!This book is intended to be a basic introduction to Spanish as it's spoken in Argentina (and likely also in Uruguay). The grammar of Argentine Spanish is essentially the same as in standard Latin American Spanish; the main difference being the use of the pronoun "vos". For that reason I have provided the verb forms as they correspond to that pronoun (rather than the pronoun "tú" of Standard Spanish), since Argentines rarely use the pronoun tú, even though they certainly understand it. I've also included a chapter that explains the "voseo" more in detail, as well as a chapter that talks about pronunciation and vocabulary differences in Argentine Spanish when compared to Standard Spanish.PLEASE NOTE: This book is NOT a book on Argentine slang (although it may contain a few slang words). For those, interesed in slang words (Argentine slang is commonly referred to as "lunfardo"), I recommend looking for a book or article specifically on that topic.This book contains a pronuncation guide, phrases useful in daily life, important vocabulary and basic grammar. This movement involved academicians studying the culture of small farmers and herders of mixed indigenous and Spanish descent in the distant valleys of the Argentine Northwest, as well as the artists and musicians who took on the role of reinterpreting these local cultures for urban audiences of mostly European descent. Oscar Chamosa combines intellectual history with ethnographic and sociocultural analysis to reconstruct the process by which mestizo culture---in Argentina called criollo culture---came to occupy the center of national folklore in a country that portrayed itself as the only white nation in South America. The author finds that the conservative plantation owners---the "sugar elites"---who exploited the criollo peasants sponsored the folklore movement that romanticized them as the archetypes of nationhood. Ironically, many of the composers and folk singers who participated in the landowner-sponsored movement adhered to revolutionary and reformist ideologies and denounced the exploitation to which those criollo peasants were subjected. Chamosa argues that, rather than debilitating the movement, these opposing and contradictory ideologies permitted its triumph and explain, in part, the enduring romanticizing of rural life and criollo culture, which are essential components of Argentine nationalism. The book not only reveals the political motivations of culture in Argentina and Latin America but also has implications for understanding the articulation of local culture with national politics and entertainment markets that characterizes cultural processes worldwide today.

In this book, Cecilia Tossounian reconstructs different representations of modern femininity from 1920s and 1930s Argentina, a complex period in which the country saw prosperity and economic crisis, a growing cosmopolitan population, the emergence of consumer culture, and the development of nationalism. Tossounian analyzes how these popular images of la joven moderna—the modern girl—helped shape Argentina’s emerging national identity. Tossounian looks at visual and written portrayals of young womanhood in magazines, newspapers, pulp fiction, advertisements, music, films, and other media. She identifies and discusses four new types of young urban women: the flapper, the worker, the sportswoman, and the beauty contestant. She shows that these diverse figures, defined by social class, highlight the tensions between gender, nation, and modernity in interwar Argentina. Arguing that images of modern young women symbolized fears of the country’s moral decadence as well as hopes of national progress and civilization, La Joven Moderna in Interwar Argentina reveals that women were at the center of a public debate about modernity and its consequences.
