Pop Corn for the Home
Author: Carleton Roy Ball
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Agriculture
Languages : en
Pages : 500
Book Description
"The production of pop corn for home use is to be encouraged. It gives the children a direct interest in farm life and affords pleasant recreation for the long winter evenings. A plat of 2 rods square will be large enough to produce a good supply for one family. If more is grown than is wanted for home use the surplus usually can be disposed of at a profit. Any one of the common varieties will give satisfactory results if properly handled. It is important to have the pop corn ripen fully on the stalk before harvesting and for this reason it should be planted early in northern sections, so it will have a long season in which to grow and mature. When the stalks are dead the ears may be husked and should then be stored in a cool, well-ventilated place and protected against mice and squirrels." -- p.2

Genetically Engineered Food
Author: Knut J. Heller
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 9783527313938
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 330
Book Description
Continuing the very successful first edition, this book reviews the most recent changes to the legal situation in Europe concerning genetically engineered food and labeling. Due to the extremely rapid developments in green biotechnology, all the chapters have been substantially revised and updated. Divided into three distinct parts, the text begins by covering applications and perspectives, including transgenic modification of production traits in farm animals, fermented food production and the production of food additives using filamentous fungi. The second section is devoted to legislation, while the final part examines methods of detection, such as DNA-based methods, and methods for detecting genetic engineering in composed and processed foods. From the reviews of the first edition: "This work promises to be a standard reference in the detection of genetically engineered food. I believe this work will find a valued place for any scientist, regulator or technical library that deals with biotechnology or detection of genetically engineered food organisms." —James J. Heinis, Journal of Agricultural & Food Information

Agriculture and Economic Growth in Argentina, 1913-84
Author: Yair Mundlak
Publisher: Intl Food Policy Res Inst
ISBN: 9780896290785
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 144
Book Description
The noted economist Yair Mundlak presents here a theory of the growth of the agricultural sector within the context of a growing economy. He explores the various aspects of the dynamics of agriculture and their relationship to the dynamics of the economy at large, offering a unique blend of theory, methodology, and empirical analysis. The rate of agricultural growth has varied across countries and over time, even though the main innovations in agricultural technology have been made available to all countries. Consequently, the difference in performance is due to the use made of the available technology. Mundlak treats the implementation of technology as an economic decision similar to decisions about resource supply and allocation. The development of agriculture, like that of other sectors, is determined to a large degree by the economic environment, especially public policies. This framework permits the author to evaluate the effects of policies on growth by examining their effects on sectoral incentives. Mundlak shows that neutral macroeconomic policies may have a stronger effect on sectoral growth than sector-specific policies. The book contains problem sets, and will be a reference and text for graduate-level courses.
