Book Description
Liberalism is often castigated for being spiritually empty and unable to provide meaning for individuals. Is it true that there simply is no spiritual side to liberalism? In Recovering the Liberal Spirit, Steven F. Pittz develops a novel conception of spiritual freedom. Drawing from Nietzsche and his figure of the "free spirit," as well as from thinkers as varied as Mill, Emerson, Goethe, Hesse, C. S. Lewis, and Tocqueville, Pittz examines a tradition of individual freedom best described as spiritual. Spiritual freedom is an often overlooked category of liberal freedom, and it provides a path to meaning without a return to communal or traditional life. While carefully considering Progressive and Communitarian counterarguments Pittz argues for both the possibility and the desirability of a free-spirited life. Citizens who are "free spirits" deliver great benefits to liberal democracies, primarily by combatting dogmatism and fanaticism and the putative authority of public opinion.

Book Description
The Spirit of American Liberal Theology is an interpretation of the entire U.S. American tradition of liberal theology. A highly condensed and far-more-accessible summary of Gary Dorrien’s three-volume trilogy, The Making of American Liberal Theology (Westminster John Knox Press 2001, 2003, and 2006), Dorrien here presses the argument that the most abundant, diverse, and persistent tradition of liberal theology is the one that blossomed in the United States and is still refashioning itself. While discussions of English and German liberalism persist, new material includes expanded treatment of the Black social gospel, the Universalists, developments into early 2020s, and a robust expression of the author’s post-Hegelian liberal-liberationist perspective.

Book Description
Excerpt from The New Frontier: A Study of the American Liberal, Spirit, Its Frontier Origin, and Its Application to Modern Problems The main thesis of this book is one that emphatically needs to be uttered, and that is uttered here with admirable force, with convincing argument, with copious illustration. It proclaims a truth which is in danger of escaping our attention amid the general clamor of the times. That truth is this: America is not radical; America is not reactionary; America is liberal. And what she has been she will continue to be for the simple and sufficient reason that liberalism is native to the very air she breathes, is the compelling product of her history, is the heart of her national tradition, is the essence of her national psychology. We are being much advised these days by many confident monitors of the public to discard our rich inheritance, as the work of men of darkened or narrow minds or of malevolent spirit. We shall not do so. At no time in her history has America stood still in complacent adoration of the past. At no stage has she been willing to cast aside her fundamental institutions and her customary habits of mind, both of which have served her well in many a period of trouble. Also at no stage has she been indisposed to improve the things that could be improved. America is neither troglodytic nor quixotic. She is optimistic and she is sensible.
