Book Description
"The European Social Fund is a key financial instrument for helping the member states in the field of employment. Over the period 2007-3 the spending will amount to over 75 billion euro or 8% of the European Union budget. For one disadvantaged group, older workers, the court verified whether the member states and the commission had set up and implemented the tools necessary to assess the effectiveness of their actions towards this group. Shortcomings were found in the design of the operational programmes and in the monitoring and evaluation systems. The court makes recommendations with an aim of improving the monitoring and evaluation of the European Social Fund spending on specific target groups."-- Page [4] of cover.

Book Description
European Globalisation Adjustment Fund (EGF) co-funds measures to help workers who have fallen victim to mass redundancies from a single business or sector within the same, or two contiguous regions to find new jobs. The European Court of Auditors assessed the contribution made by the European Globalisation Adjustment Fund (EGF), in the form of EU added value, to enabling redundant workers to return to the labour market. While nearly all eligible workers were offered personalised measures, in all audited cases the Court identified income support measures which would have been paid by the Member States anyway. The audit also concluded that reintegration data was insufficient and that approval procedure for the EGF support is too long.

Book Description
This book investigates the paradox of rich countries of Western Europe, who have high levels of poverty whilst proclaiming its eradication as one of the primary social and economic goals. It looks at how policies often do not achieve their goals, why countries need mechanisms to reduce wage inequality and why they choose to provide universal benefits instead of systems of selective benefits targeted at the poor. Along with cross-countries comparisons, the volume also presents analysis of the minimum income in France, Portugal, Italy, Finland, Ireland, Belgium, and Greece.

Book Description
Drug overdose, driven largely by overdose related to the use of opioids, is now the leading cause of unintentional injury death in the United States. The ongoing opioid crisis lies at the intersection of two public health challenges: reducing the burden of suffering from pain and containing the rising toll of the harms that can arise from the use of opioid medications. Chronic pain and opioid use disorder both represent complex human conditions affecting millions of Americans and causing untold disability and loss of function. In the context of the growing opioid problem, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) launched an Opioids Action Plan in early 2016. As part of this plan, the FDA asked the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine to convene a committee to update the state of the science on pain research, care, and education and to identify actions the FDA and others can take to respond to the opioid epidemic, with a particular focus on informing FDA's development of a formal method for incorporating individual and societal considerations into its risk-benefit framework for opioid approval and monitoring.

Book Description
In this book the authors explore the state of the art on efficiency measurement in health systems and international experts offer insights into the pitfalls and potential associated with various measurement techniques. The authors show that: - The core idea of efficiency is easy to understand in principle - maximizing valued outputs relative to inputs, but is often difficult to make operational in real-life situations - There have been numerous advances in data collection and availability, as well as innovative methodological approaches that give valuable insights into how efficiently health care is delivered - Our simple analytical framework can facilitate the development and interpretation of efficiency indicators.
