This study discusses testing conducted in January 1988 for the Town of Hilton Head Island and the South Carolina Department of Archives and History as part of a National Park Service Historic Preservation Grant. Sites included Jenkins Island and Fairfield plantations, the slave row and a standing industrial structure associated with Cotton Hope Plantation, a prehistoric shell midden and a site containing both prehistoric and historic components (38BU323/1149, 38BU830, 38BU832, 38BU96, 38BU90, 38BU1166, and 38BU871). All of these sites are recommended as eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places.

In the spring of 2007 IAS archaeological investigators revealed from test of two sites (38BU1376 and 38 BU 1377) possessed meaningful artifact assemblages and the possibility of intact subsurface features. These sites have been recommended as eligible for listing on the National Register. Sites 38BU 2017 and 38BU2020 produced limited numbers of artifacts and no site definition. They possess little research potential and are recommended not eligible for listing on the National Register.

During the period of Aug, 18-25, 2004, archival research and Phase II archeological testing was conducted at the Pinckney Retreat Development Site in Beaufort County, South Carolina. The archival research focused on cartographic and photographic images of the National Register-eligible Jean de la Gaye House and Retreat Plantation. Sites in this study, associated with the Jeand de la Gaye House, were tested to clearly assess their National Register eligibility. Site 38BU1104 contains an intact early to middle 19th century component and Site and 38BU2094 has the potential for an undisturbed Woodland occupation, which renders the sites eligible for the National Register. Data recovery investigations are recommended for the core significant areas. Sites 38BU2097 and 38BU2099 are both considered ineligible for the National Register and require no further work at these locations.
