Book Description
Excerpt from A Ceramic Study of Virginia Archeology The present study is based on 43 collections representing 37 sites and sherds in the national collections of the United States National Museum and 65 other collections representing 55 sites and sherds. Four more sites, which produced projectile points but no pottery, are included in the study. Hence, a total Of sherds from 96 different sites comprise the study. Such a large potsherd sample from so many sites scattered throughout the entire State makes it possible to demonstrate certain diagnostic ceramic trends for Vir ginia. Since the sherds from several sites were restudied by the author even though they had been briefly described in articles of the Quarterly Bulletin Of the Archeological Society Of Virginia, it has been possible to assure classification of these materials into the same system of types and wares (series) For the major trends of quantita tive results, of course, only those sites with a sufficient sample could be used, even though sites with smaller numbers of sherds were useful in adding to the distributional analysis of the ceramic complexes.
