Based on results of the pilot study, the following recommendations are made: when the choice of gear is limited because of manpower or equipment constraints, seines, electroshocking, gill nets, and hoop nets should be used in riverine systems; the number of habitats studied should be limited to dike fields, revetted banks, natural banks, and abandoned channels; the same habitat type should be sampled at two or more different locations to determine variance and comparability of physical and biological parameters; the number of samples taken with a particular gear in any given habitat should be increased to reduce the variation in C/f values; because of considerable temporal variation in species composition and abundance of fish communities in the different habitats, sampling should be conducted throughout the year; and before beginning a major field study, a pilot study should be conducted to familiarize field personnel with the physical characteristics of a study area, the fish species associated with the different habitats, and adequate sampling methods for the different fish communities.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the ecological role of dikes and revetments in a riverine ecosystem. Collections were made from the Lower Mississippi River near Greenville, Miss., to compare the relative value of four habitat types for fish. Sampling was conducted from April 1979 to September 1980 to describe species diversity, abundance, and distribution of fish from dike fields, revetted banks, natural banks, and an abandoned river channel. Fish populations differed considerably among the four habitat types investigated. The greatest number of species was captured in the dike field habitat (53), followed in order by the abandoned channel (31), revetted banks (27), and natural banks (24).

The goal of this review and synthesis of the literature, published and unpublished, is to describe the major processes that shape and influence the aquatic habitats and fish communities in the Yazoo-Mississippi Delta (YMD) and to outline a program of research. The YMD is influenced by the large geographic and temporal scales of the Mississippi River watershed. It extends over 41 percent of the contiguous United States. The Mississippi River has existed in its current location for more than 1.2 million years, and ancient fish species are still present in the watershed. About 9,500 years BP, the Mississippi River formed into a predominantly meandering channel from which most of the aquatic habitats in the YMD developed. Oxbows formed in the meander belts shape the topography of the YMD and are a fundamental part of the development of the aquatic habitat of the YMD. Seasonal floods are keystone events in the YMD, but the process is altered substantially from its previous natural state. Levees, flood control structures, land use practices, and loss of large wood in river channels have modified natural processes throughout most of the YMD. However, most of the larger fish species present during aboriginal occupation of the YMD are still present. Given the large-scale loss of habitat throughout the YMD and the deterioration of water quality, the abundance and diversity of fish likely have declined. In the past few years, management of aquatic habitats in the YMD has centered on mitigating and preventing some of the adverse effects of anthropogenic disturbance. A program of "naturalization" to move aquatic ecosystem processes closer to natural conditions is possible within the context of socioeconomic constraints. The research approach proposed in this paper provides a model to develop an understanding of the fish and aquatic habitat that can contribute to a sustainable restoration program.

Dike structures, designed and installed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in the Lower Mississippi River, can modify river geomorphology, discharge rates, and sediment movements within the river. These changes in the river's characteristics, plus the presence of the dikes themselves, result in shifts in types, sizes, and variety of aquatic habitats on a yearly basis. At low water river stages, isolated dike pools bordered by bars are formed, creating distinct aquatic habitats which are quite variable in size and depth. Fish and water samples collected in two such dike pools as well as from the adjacent river border wee used to determine the importance of dike pool habitats to fish communities during a low water period of 1980. Hydrological results indicate that overall differences in water quality were easily distinguishable once stratification began. Surface readings of dissolved oxygen, temperature, and pH were generally higher in the pool habitats than in the main channel. As depth increased, the opposite was true for dissolved oxygen, temperature, and pH. Conductivity at the bottom in the pools during isolation was much higher than in the main channel.

To expedite the research data management system (RDMS) required for complex and large-scale ecological field studies being done at the U.S. Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station (WES), a graphical display system was developed. The Statistical Analysis System (SAS) provides the framework for making open-ended RDMS practical and cost-effective. PROC VIVIPLOT is the first of a series of SAS procedures that will produce copy-ready figures with some independence as to choice of plotter. Several approaches are available that minimize errors in coding variables. Numeric codes, 'smart codes, ' with embedded information allocated to positions within the value codes are widely used but unacceptable for variables with many values and/or many levels of classification. 'Nonsense' codes, or codes without embedded information, however, efficiently circumvent the problems associated with smart codes. Using nonsense codes, alphanumeric variable values are assigned a sequential numeric code as new values are encountered in the data base, irrespective of the position of the value in the classification scheme for that variable. With the use of nonsense codes, the management approach is open-ended and does not require a knowledge of the number of potential classification levels for the variables. In addition, experience with several large environmental data bases indicates that coding errors appear to be less frequent using nonsense codes than in those studies in which a smart code approach was used.

Larval fish were collected in the Lower Mississippi River from 8 March to 13 November 1978 to describe variations in diversity and abundance of larval fish among nine types of habitats for the entire spawning season, investigate diel fluctuations in diversity and abundance, and evaluate replicate sampling procedures. The abandoned channel and oxbow lake habitats had similar larval populations; these habitats showed relatively low diversity and high densities of clupeids and centrarchids. Natural banks and revetted banks had high and similar diversities and abundance of larval fish. There were considerable variations in density and diversity among the four revetted bank stations sampled. The dike field habitat was characterized by a high diversity and moderate density of larval fish. All families of larval fish collected during the entire study were represented in the dike field habitat. The diversity and density of larval fish differed greatly among the six dike field stations sampled. Three of the four main channel stations sampled showed low diversity and density of larval fish. The fourth main channel station had high diversity of larval fish and high densities were observed on two sampling dated. Density of larval fish was low but diversity of larval fish was relatively high in the temporary secondary channel habitat. Density and diversity of larval fish were low in the permanent secondary channel and the sandbar habitats. The purpose of this study is to obtain baseline data on the fish and benthic communities of eight Lower Mississippi flood-plain lakes, including abandoned channel type I, abandoned channel type II, and oxbow lakes. Fish communities were sampled and evaluated using electrofishing, experimental gill netting, and rotenone. The comparison of fish populations of oxbow lakes and abandoned channel type II lakes illustrated similarity in species occurrence, relative abundance, and length frequency. Abandoned channel type I fish populations were not similar to those of the other two lakes. Fish and population data illustrated that although fish are transient among main channel and floodplain habitats during high-water periods, there are particular habitat types that provide important spawning and nursery areas, forage availability and cover for the majority of the lower Mississippi River fishes when river flow is within the channel top banks. Length frequency analysis showed similarities in size categories of fish from all habitats sampled. Threadfin shad comprised the dominant forage base at most habitats. Year class strength coincides with changing hydrology, and it is therefore impossible to characterize static fish standing stocks from each specific habitat.
