Excerpt from Appropriations Expended, Results Reached, and Present Condition of the Work of the Astrophysical Observatory: Report of the Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution of All Appropriations Heretofore Expended by the Astrophysical Observatory, Results Reached, and Present Condition of the Work, in Response to Senate Resolution of February 25, 1901 In appropriating in the sundry civil act, approved March 3, 1901, the sum of 812,000 for the maintenance of the Astrophysical Observatory, under the control of the Smithsonian Institution, during the fiscal year ending June 30, 1902, Congress has added the following words: That the Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution is directed to report to Congress on the first day of the next regular session an entire account of all appropriations heretofore expended by the Astrophysical Observatory, what results have been reached, and what is the present condition of the work of said observatory. In response to this requirement, I have the honor to submit the following report, giving (1) an entire account of all appropriations heretofore expended by the Astrophysical Observatory; (2) a statement of the results which have been reached, and (3) the present condition of the work of said observatory. I have the honor to be, very respectfully, your obedient servant, S. P. Langley, Seeretary. The President pro tempore of the Senate.
