Book Description
Excerpt from Applied Business Correspondence That knack is what makes some collection letters force you to realize the importance or the necessity or the good grace of sending a remittance at once, while others don't cause you a second's thought. In short, through all business correspondence - indeed, through all business intercourse, and through all social inter course, too, whether by correspondence, advertising, sales manship, or casual conversation - the knack of expressing ideas or feeling in words is of first importance. What's the use of accommodating a man with a loan and then of making him feel you begrudged it? What's the use of exchanging goods for a dissatisfied customer if you make him feel grouchy towards you by doing it? What's the use of sending a prospect a description of your goods if you don't make the description mean something to him? There is none, you will say and you are right. Book Description
Excerpt from Business English This work grew out of teaching English to college men who were beginning their studies in Engineering. It seemed for various reasons desirable to give such students - along with their work in pure literature and technical English - some in struction in English as adapted to buying and selling, advertis ing and correspondence. There seemed however to be no text-book quite available for such a purpose. A purely elementary text-book, ignoring all high-school English and some of the grammar-school instruo tion, would not do. Nor could the need be supplied by some more advanced book devoted to the principles of correspond ence. What was needed was a book which took into considera tion the best standards and scholarship of college teaching, and applied the established principles of composition to the special problems of business, with due reference to the vocabularies of commerce and commercial law. From this point of view, then, the text of the book was writ ten. When finished, much of it was seen to be Within the grasp of younger students. It was then determined to simplify the text a little further, and to construct exercises which would make the book serviceable in the third and fourth year of tech nical and commercial high schools, in the first year of technical colleges, in business colleges, and in correspondence work. The manner in which this adjustment has been made may be seen at a glance in the exercises under Argument (p. Book Description
Excerpt from Advanced Business Correspondence One of the chief Obstacles to the extension of the study has been the dearth of suitable textbooks. Most of the books on letter writing that have been available were designed either for the man in actual business or for the students in high schools and commercial colleges. In books of the former class the tendency is to lay undue stress upon methods, with comparative neglect Of basic principles. In the high-school text it is necessary to give much space to matters of technic, such as grammar, sen tence structure, and diction. Both types of books are valuable; neither is perfectly adapted to the needs Of university students. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
