Notre travail a consisté à évaluer des moyens et des méthodes de type numérique afin d'élimines la sensibilité importante de l'image au bruit de la ligne. On sait que les durées de transmission de la même information sous forme numérique et sous forme analogique à travers un canal de transmission de largeur données sont dans un rapport élevé. Nous avons donc été amenés à rechercher des méthodes de compression permettant la réduction du temps de transmission. Nous avon tout d'abord abordé le cas des images monodhromes puis avons étendu la méthode choisies aux images trichromes. Tout au long du premier chapitre, nous présentons différentes techniques de compression utilisées en s'attachant plus particulièrement aux principes mis en jeu qu'aux résultats pratiques de ces techniques. La méthode de compression que nous avons adoptée fait l'objet du second chapitre. C'est essentiellement une modulation par impulsions codées de différences améliorée par l'utilisation d'un prédicteur et d'un quantificateur performants. Le principe de la méthode est de ne intervenir le quantificateur que pour rattraper les erreurs trop importantes du prédicteur. Nous obtenons ainsi un taux de compression maximal élevé mais qui néanmoins est fonction de la complexité de l'image.
