Il y a toujours une suite d’appels dans la carrière de toute personne œuvrant pour Dieu. Le double devoir qui incombe à tout un chacun est de localiser le point de départ, le tout premier appel, saisir la vocation primordiale sans laquelle tout le reste est faussé, puis, savoir y répondre. Le primordial, l’essentiel et le prioritaire est l’appel de Dieu concernant le salut en Jésus-Christ notre Seigneur. Tout le reste, à savoir l’exercice de différents dons, ministères et métiers, ne sont que secondaires, et sans valeur si nous n’avons pas au préalable la vie éternelle (laquelle s’acquiert en répondant à l’appel premier de Dieu). En effet, que servira-t-il à un homme de gagner le monde entier s’il perd son âme ? L’ironie du sort est qu’en ne commençant pas par répondre à l’appel au salut, toute autre activité dans la vie se trouvera toujours compromise et entachée de niaiseries. En outre, la performance dans chaque activité requiert une éducation, et il y a plusieurs formations et de plusieurs types. Là encore, il est important de savoir apprécier la formation de base ou l’école primaire, celle de la propre main de Dieu. Elle sert de soubassement à tout autre entrainement, formel, informel ou non formel. Sans cette école fondamentale, toute érudition est vaine. Ainsi, ce qui compte ce n’est pas plus de servir Dieu comme Ministre à la Parole, Archevêque, Architecte, Chantre, Diacre, Donateur, Intercesseur, Magistrat, Médecin, Pilote, Professeur, ou scientifique. Par contre, l’important est de le servir comme Disciple, Affranchi, Brisé, Craignant Dieu et Obéissant : « Si quelqu’un me sert, qu’il me suive ; et là où je suis, là aussi sera mon serviteur… ». Following the launching of jihad against Sarkin Gobir and other Hausa chiefs by Uthman dan Fodio, a renowned Muslim reformer, Yola became one of the focal points for Uthman's Movement south of the Lake Chad region. The leader was Modibbo Adama (1809-1847) and the emirate he formed was called Adamawa. The study analyses the factors which came into play in the creation and maintenance of the emirate out of a vast array of segmented units of authority. By the middle of the 19th century, Europeans started visiting the region in a general drive to abolish slave trade from its sources and substitute it with legitimate trade. Not contented with mere trade, European expeditions competed with one another to colonize the region for their respective governments. Lamido Zubeiru (1890-1901) refused to submit, but the British, French and Germans through European diplomatic channels partitioned the emirate in 1893 and 1894. The threat of Mahdism and the consolidation of Rabeh's power over Bornu and neighbouring kingdoms provided the Europeans additional reasons for waging war against the emirate and to overthrow almost a century of Fulani hegemony. The principal sources are oral tradition preserved in local chronicles and contemporary reports of European travellers, soldiers, administrators and Royal Niger Company officials.

Diverse religious practices such as these have long baffled scholars, whose research often starts with the assumption that individuals commit, or refuse to commit, to an entire institutionally framed package of beliefs and practices. Meredith McGuire points the way forward toward a new way of understanding religion. She argues that scholars must study religion not as it is defined by religious organizations, but as it is actually lived in people's everyday lives. Drawing on her own extensive fieldwork, as well as recent work by others, McGuire explores the many, seemingly mundane, ways that individuals practice their religions and develop their spiritual lives.
