Book Description
This monograph gives an excellent review of the issue of antimicrobial prophylaxis in urol ogy and the use of the new fluoroquinolones in urology. The development of the fluoro quinolones has had a profound effect in urology, specifically because of the unique phar macokinetics of the fluoroquinolones with their two or more pK values, making concen tration of these compounds possible in the prostate. Their wide spectra against infecting organisms causing infections in the urinary tract have also made them popular and almost ideal in the treatment of urinary tract infections. This thesis summarizes in an concise way and brings up to date practically all our know ledge concerning the use of fluoroquinolones in urology. The chapter on antimicrobial prophylaxis covers our present knowledge completely, especially concerning the use of these drugs in antimicrobial prophylaxis in transurethral surgery. Book Description
This book summarizes and brings up-to-date practically all our knowledge concerning antimicrobial prophylaxis in urology. Because of the profound effect the new fluoroquinolones have had in urology, their use is particularly emphasized and critically evaluated. In the first part, general considerations of antimicrobial prophylaxis and their specific problems in urology are provided. This includes a cost-benefit analysis of antimicrobial prophylaxis. The second and third part summarizes results of laboratory and animal studies. The fourth part includes human studies and an extensive review of the pertinent literature. For the first time summarized in one book, specific guidelines for each urologic procedure are provided, based on these theoretical, experimental and clinical considerations. This book primarily addresses the urologist; but also infectious disease specialists and hospital epidemiologists can derive new and relevant information from it.

Book Description
This book provides a comprehensive analysis of the use of antibiotics in the urological setting. It is the first work to focus exclusively on the treatment of urinary tract infections, starting from the recent epidemiological and microbiological acquisitions in terms of bacterial resistance. The structure of the book reflects everyday clinical practice, and the sections are divided in line with the level of clinical severity, starting from the uncomplicated lower urinary tract infections and continuing to severe uro-sepsis. Particular emphasis has been given to patient-related risk factors, to the role of antibiotic prophylaxis in urological surgical procedures, and to the treatment of male associated gland infections. The final section offers a dedicated tool for easy and rapid consultation, helping physicians in the everyday clinical practice setting. The book offers the first practical guide for physicians who treat patients affectedby urological infections. Further, it offers a simple guide to consulting for all physicians who occasionally care for these patients.

Book Description
Antimicrobial agents are essential for the treatment of life-threatening infections and for managing the burden of minor infections in the community. In addition, they play a key role in organ and bone marrow transplantation, cancer chemotherapy, artificial joint and heart valve surgery. Unlike other classes of medicines, they are vulnerable to resistance from mutations in target microorganisms, and their adverse effects may extend to other patients (increased risk of cross-infection). As a consequence, there is a constant requirement for new agents, as well as practices that ensure the continued effective prescribing of licensed agents. Public awareness and concerns about drug resistant organisms has led to widespread publicity and political action in the UK, Europe and worldwide. The control of drug resistance and the implementation of good prescribing practice are now legal requirements in the UK as a result of the UK Health Act (2008). These fundamental changes underscore the need for a thorough understanding of the advantages and risks associated with specific antibiotic choices. This sixth edition of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy continues to be a valuable resource for undergraduates and graduates requiring a thorough grounding in the scientific basis and clinical application of these drugs. This new edition is updated to include the most recently licensed agents, notably in the treatment of viral infections including HIV/AIDS, and contains new guidance on prescribing practice and infection control practices that limit the development and spread of resistant organisms.

Book Description
Quinolones constitute a large class of synthetic antimicrobial agents that are highly effective in the treatment of many types of infectious diseases, particularly those caused by bacteria. New quinolones are continually being developed as bacterial species develop resistance to existing quinolones. This book presents the most current information available in our continual struggle to conquer disease. Over time, bacteria become resistant to medicines that are used to combat them. Because of this, the medical world is always in search of new and improved ways to battle these disease-causing bacteria. Quinolones are at the forefront of this research. Edited by one of the world's foremost authorities on the subject, the third edition of this highly successful title will serve as a valuable tool for primary care physicians and researchers interested in a comprehensive, up-to-date reference on the chemistry, mechanisms of action, development of resistance, and clinical efficacy of both currently available and newer quinolone compounds under investigation. This is the eagerly anticipated fully revised edition of the standard reference in the field. - Eagerly anticipated updated edition of noted title covering synthetic microbial agents that are useful against infectious disease, particularly those caused by bacteria - Edited by one of the foremost experts in the field of quinolone research and infectious disease - History of quinolones, chemistry & mechanisms of action, pharmacology, safety aspects - Role of quinolones in treating various types of infections, including respiratory infections, gastrointestinal infections, urinary tract infections, prostatitis, STDs and bacterial meningitis as well as their use in immunocompromised patients

Book Description
This volume provides an excellent survey of the chemistry, microbiology, pharmacology and clinical use of the oral cephalosporins in general and the newer agents in particular. The cephalosporins have long provided satisfactory treatment for many disorders without causing serious side effects; and over the past fifty years forms with different antimicrobial, pharmacologic and toxicologic properties have been developed. Despite the broad spectrum of their activity against a large variety of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, the third-generation oral cephalosporins including the prodrug esters do not work against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, methicillin-resistant staphylococci, enterococci or Bacteroides species. Many, however, are suitable for treating infections of the respiratory and urinary tracts and of the skin and its structure, as well as certain sexually-transmitted diseases. Authors consider other possible uses, against multi-resistant Enterobacteriaceae for instance, but also point out the limitations of the oral cephalosporins. For those working in the fields of infectious disease, bacteriology, chemotherapy, pharmaceutics and pharmacokinetics, this book is a valuable source of authoritative information.
