The generalized likelihood ratios needed for detection and other types of hypothesis tests are presented for the case of time-invariant input signals, clutter, noise, etc., for N antenna elements, K targets, K' discrete clutter sources, and uniform background clutter and receiver noise. The targets and clutter considered were assumed to be nonscintillating. Specific likelihood ratio tests are also given for the detection of one or more targets versus no targets, and a block diagram of a detector that performs these tests is shown. Time- and space-saving computing techniques are described that reduce the complexity of these very general tests. Probability distributions are also presented that are immediately applicable to estimation as well as to hypothesis testing and that result in a substantial savings of effort in the synthesis of estimators for decision-theoretic antenna systems. The general problem of the hypothesis testing and estimating of N targets in clutter and noise is formulated by means of decision theory. The theory is applied to the case of a single, nonscintillating target with unknown a priori amplitude, phase, and location. The a priori statistics of these parameters are assumed, and target detection is accomplished by means of a generalized likelihood ratio test. The hypothesis test is instrumented for clutter as well as receiver noise. Both scintillating and nonscintillating clutter are considered. (Author).

The functional design of a decision-theoretic adaptive radar (DTAR) is outlined with a comparison among scanning, multiple-beam, and parallel-antenna-element transmitting and receiving systems. Decision-theoretic antenna processing is operationally contrasted with conventional processing. The performance of DTAR is evaluated for single-target detection and estimation and contrasted with the performance of conventional processors. Average Bayes risk is used as a performance criterion. The multiple-target hypothesis testing and estimation problem is formulated and solved for a uniform clutter environment. A suboptimum estimator is developed to ease computational difficulties. A simplified decision tree is developed and proved optimum. Range and velocity measurements are designed by analogy with antenna array theory. A frequency-sampling coherent radar results. (Author).

Through-the-wall radar imaging (TWRI) allows police, fire and rescue personnel, first responders, and defense forces to detect, identify, classify, and track the whereabouts of humans and moving objects. Electromagnetic waves are considered the most effective at achieving this objective, yet advances in this multi-faceted and multi-disciplinary technology require taking phenomenological issues into consideration and must be based on a solid understanding of the intricacies of EM wave interactions with interior and exterior objects and structures. Providing a broad overview of the myriad factors involved, namely size, weight, mobility, acquisition time, aperture distribution, power, bandwidth, standoff distance, and, most importantly, reliable performance and delivery of accurate information, Through-the-Wall Radar Imaging examines this technology from the algorithmic, modeling, experimentation, and system design perspectives. It begins with coverage of the electromagnetic properties of walls and building materials, and discusses techniques in the design of antenna elements and array configurations, beamforming concepts and issues, and the use of antenna array with collocated and distributed apertures.
