Book Description
This report provides an overview of the 2018 Yakutat Management Area (YMA) commercial set gillnet fisheries and stock status. The total commercial harvest of all species was 131,400 fish with an estimated preliminary exvessel value of $974,200, a 54% decrease from the 2017 value of $2.5 million. The harvest included 300 Chinook, 7,200 sockeye, 95,600 coho, 28,100 pink, and 100 chum salmon. The Situk-Ahrnklin Inlet commercial fishery produced 90% of the total exvessel value. The total number of individual permits fished during the season was 103 permits, which was below the 10-year average of 118 permits. The total sockeye salmon harvest was well below the recent average of 113,900 fish with the Situk-Ahrnklin Inlet fishery accounting for the highest harvest. The coho salmon harvest was also below average, and the Situk-Ahrnklin Inlet produced 89% of the areawide coho salmon harvest. Pink salmon returns throughout YMA were average in 2018, but the overall harvest was below average. Chum salmon harvest was also below average. With recent years of poor production and low Chinook salmon returns to the Situk River, the subsistence, sport, and commercial fisheries were closed to Chinook salmon retention for the eighth year in a row. The 2018 Situk River weir count of 420 large Chinook salmon was below the biological escapement goal (BEG) range of 450–1,050 fish. Chinook salmon escapement goals were achieved on the Alsek and Klukshu Rivers. The Situk River weir count of 26,704 sockeye salmon fell below the BEG range of 30,000–70,000 fish. The Klukshu and Lost Rivers were also below escapement goals for sockeye salmon.

Book Description
This report provides an overview of the 2017 Yakutat Management Area (YMA) commercial set gillnet fisheries and stock status. The total commercial harvest of 356,000 salmon was above the recent 10-year average of 343,400 salmon. The harvest included 900 Chinook, 122,500 sockeye, 140,000 coho, 91,700 pink, and 900 chum salmon. A total of 113 permits were fished in 2017, slightly less than the recent average of 118 permits. The estimated exvessel value of the 2017 commercial harvest was $2.5 million, above the recent average of $2.2 million. The Situk-Ahrnklin Inlet commercial fishery produced 70% of the total exvessel value. The total sockeye salmon harvest was near the recent average of 125,000 fish with the Situk-Ahrnklin Inlet fishery accounting for the highest harvest. The coho salmon harvest was above average and the Situk-Ahrnklin Inlet produced 97% of the total Yakutat area coho salmon harvest. Pink salmon returns throughout YMA were robust in 2017 with the majority of the harvest coming from the Situk River and Yakutat Bay fisheries. Chum salmon harvest was below average. There were no directed Chinook salmon fisheries in the Situk-Ahrnklin Inlet. With recent years of poor Chinook salmon returns and below goal escapements, the subsistence, sport, and commercial fisheries were closed for the seventh year in a row. The 2017 Situk River escapement count of 1,188 Chinook salmon was above the BEG range of 450–1,050. This was the first time in three years the escapement goal was achieved and the highest weir count since 2003. YMA salmon escapement goals were met or exceeded with the exception of Lost, Alsek, and Klukshu rivers sockeye salmon, and the Alsek and Klukshu rivers Chinook salmon escapement goals.
