Landings of commercially-caught fish and shellfish at North Carolina ports in 1956 amounted to 300.7 million pounds. Menhaden (251.6 million pounds) accounted for 84 percent of the total and almost all of this production was landed in Carteret and Brunswick Counties. During December, the catch of menhaden (103.0 million pounds) was reportedly the greatest quantity ever landed in any single month in North Carolina and amounted to 34 percent of the 1956 total catch of fishery products. Other items landed in volume were alewives, shrimp, blue crabs, and catfish and bullheads.
