Book Description
Philosophies of essence provides a critical evaluation of the concept of 'essence' from the Pre-Socratics to the present, as well as indicating the social roots of the various developments. Further, it shows the fruitfulness the concept still has for a scientific materialistic outlook. In addition, a new dual formulation of the concept is given.--Preface.

Book Description
The turn of the millennium has been marked by new developments in the study of early modern philosophy. In particular, the philosophy of René Descartes has been reinterpreted in a number of important and exciting ways, specifically concerning his work on the mind-body union, the connection between objective and formal reality, and his status as a moral philosopher. These fresh interpretations have coincided with a renewed interest in overlooked parts of the Cartesian corpus and a sustained focus on the similarities between Descartes’ thought and the philosophy of Baruch Spinoza. Mind, Body, and Morality consists of fifteen chapters written by scholars who have contributed significantly to the new turn in Descartes and Spinoza scholarship. The volume is divided into three parts. The first group of chapters examines different metaphysical and epistemological problems raised by the Cartesian mind-body union. Part II investigates Descartes’ and Spinoza’s understanding of the relations between ideas, knowledge, and reality. Special emphasis is put on Spinoza’s conception of the relation between activity and passivity. Finally, the last part explores different aspects of Descartes’ moral philosophy, connecting his views to important predecessors, Augustine and Abelard, and comparing them to Spinoza.

Book Description
PROZAC FREE PETS is written for pet owners who want to safely and permanently change negative emotional and behavioral patterns in their companion animals. This book is designed to offer alternatives to the increasingly frequent practice of using allopathic drugs to treat emotional imbalances in pets. Using two time-tested holistic treatments, Flower Essences and Homeopathy, author Kim Rockshaw, offers safe and simple solutions to seemingly complex problems. Written for those new to both forms of treatment, the reader is given an explanation and history of each healing modality, as well as treatment instructions, that insure success. Through the use of these treatments, solutions are suggested for minor and more complex behavioral issues: Past abuse, separation anxiety, aggression, fear, jealousy, grief, as well as personality changes due to physical trauma. A section on Behavior Modification also offers practical help for some of the most common feline and canine problems such as inappropriate elimination, property destruction and dominance issues.

Book Description
Making Animals Public: television, animality and political engagement focuses on the proliferation of animal content on television and how this has transformed how animals are known and encountered, generating unique modes of televisual animality. The book examines the multiplicity of public realities and knowledges that animals on TV have constituted: from scientific objectivity, to the unique Australian environment, to controversial victims of gross exploitation. Just as television has made animals public in very particular ways, it has also made new publics that have learnt to be affected by them. Thanks to extraordinary access to the ABC’s Natural History and general archives, the authors are able to investigate the dynamic relation between making animals public and making publics over time.
