Book Description
History Flows through Us introduces a new dialogue between leading historians and psychoanalysts and provides essential insights into the nature of historical trauma. The contributors – German historians, historians of the Holocaust and psychoanalysts of different disciplinary backgrounds – address the synergy between history and psychoanalysis in an engaging and accessible manner. Together they develop a response to German history and the Holocaust that is future-oriented and timely in the presence of today’s ethnic hatreds. In the process, they help us to appreciate the emotional and political legacy of history’s collective crimes. This book illustrates how history and the psyche shape one another and the degree to which history flows through all of us as human beings. Its innovative cross-disciplinary approach draws on the work of the historian and psychoanalyst Thomas Kohut. The volume includes an extended dialogue with Kohut in which he reflects on the study of German history and the Holocaust at the intersection of history and psychoanalysis. This book demonstrates that the fields of history and psychoanalysis are each concerned with the role of empathy and with the study of memory and narrative. History Flows through Us will appeal to general readers, students and professionals in cultural history, Holocaust and trauma studies, sociology, psychoanalysis, psychotherapy and psychology.

Book Description
"The History of Herodotus" is a seminal work written by the ancient Greek historian Herodotus. Comprising multiple volumes, this monumental text is considered one of the earliest examples of historical writing and serves as a primary source for understanding the ancient world. In Volume I of "The History of Herodotus," the historian delves into the origins and events leading up to the Greco-Persian Wars, particularly focusing on the conflict between the Greek city-states and the mighty Persian Empire. Herodotus meticulously recounts the rise of the Persian Empire under Cyrus the Great, its expansion under Darius I, and the subsequent Persian invasions of Greece. Through his narrative, Herodotus not only chronicles the military campaigns and political machinations of the era but also provides insights into the cultures, customs, and beliefs of the peoples involved. His accounts include vivid descriptions of battles, diplomatic negotiations, and legendary anecdotes, all of which contribute to a rich tapestry of ancient history.

Book Description
This book, in two volumes, contains the first English translation, with introduction and annotation, of the História da Etiópia by the Spanish Jesuit missionary priest Pedro Páez, 1564-1622, who worked in the Portuguese missions, first in India and then in Ethiopia, long thought to be the kingdom of the legendary Prester John. Paez's learned but often polemical work is a major contribution to the political, social, cultural and religious history of Ethiopia in the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, and to the history of early Portuguese and Spanish missions in Africa and India, and West European attempts to come to terms with non-European cultures.

Book Description
Marshall amps have defined the sound of rock for a generation, boasting such notable users as Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Ritchie Blackmore and Jimmy Page. This book explores the British company responsible for that sweet overdrive sound - the company that originated the amp "stack" - tracing the impressive lineage of its valve ("tube" to us Yanks!) guitar amps. Doyle is the acknowledged authority on the subject, and here he combines detailed chronologies of the various model and serial numbers, straightforward explanations of their features and construction, and aesthetic evaluations of the results. The book is dotted with the names of rock luminaries and peppered with photos - well over 100 black-and-white ones, plus a 32-page color section and a 32-page full-color appendix that reproduces all of the Marshall catalogues of the sixties.

Book Description
Environmental history has evolved into a well-established historical subfield which has broadened the horizons of historical research, beyond human affairs, to include the study of human interactions with natural and man-made environments. This broadened scope has attracted scholars from many different fields; a development which is reflected by this volume as it highlights the recent studies on East Asian environmental history by scholars of History, Economic History, Political ecology, Sociology and Environmental Studies. This book examines the local realities and environmental changes in East Asia, and is one of a few publications in English on the subject. Contributors apply rich historical material, maps and statistical data to reveal the local environmental realities infused by global perspectives. Part I deals with attitude toward nature, focusing on the soundscape conceived by traditional Chinese literati and on "industrious revolution" in Tokugawa Japan. Part II includes four case studies which respectively discuss the hydraulic management and political ecology in the Yongle reign (1403-1424), the "Woosung Bar" controversy in the 1870s, the expansion of Daihaizi Reservoir in Xinjiang in the 1950s, and interactions between the indigenous communities and NGOs in Hualien, Taiwan. Part III presents case studies of Japan dealing with natural disasters: volcano eruption, floods, and the human actions around Tokyo since the eighteenth century. These chapters and the insights they offer provide the reader with the most recent research on East Asian environmental history. Covering the geographical areas of Japan, North and Northwest China, the Lower Yangzi Delta and Taiwan, and the timeframe spanning the seventh century BC to the present day, the book will be of great interest to anyone studying the history of East Asia, environmental history or environmental studies.
