Book Description
PREFACEThe aim of this textbook is to introduce Bible students and translators to the basic compositional structure and literary style of Hebrew poetry, especially the lyric-liturgical poetry found in the Book of Psalms (the Psalter). It is also intended to give readers some idea of the functions of the different psalms, emphasizing the manner in which these texts were used, and are still being used, to carry out several important communicative purposes. We shall see how the psalmists constructed these beautiful prayer-songs so as to express their deepest spiritual needs, problems, thoughts, and emotions---to God first of all, but also to the great assembly of fellow believers. Although the basic principles that are learned here focus specifically on the Book of Psalms, they can also be applied in the many passages, both long and short, that have been written as poetry in the Old Testament, especially in the prophetic books. The approach to be followed is known as "discourse analysis." This simply means that during the course of our study we will try to examine the different aspects of these poetic texts as an integrated whole. The focus will be upon the formal features of the psalms, on both the higher as well as the lower levels of discourse structure. But elements of content (e.g., key terms) and function (e.g., psalm types or genres) will also receive due consideration.

Book Description
Understanding Biblical Hebrew poetry is a formidable task and the complexity rises exponentially when attempting translation. This collection of studies examines both the analysis of select Psalms and their translation into English and a Bantu language. Wendland uses his "literary functional equivalence" (LiFE) approach to translation to discuss parallelism, chiastic structures, and other aspects of Hebrew discourse in poetry, and how these are manifested on both the micro- and macro-levels of a particular Psalm. Readers of this volume will - better appreciate the beauty and power of the Psalms with their diverse artistic and rhetorical features, - be able to develop their own method of investigating biblical poetry, - understand how to apply analytical insights to the practice of translation, and - evaluate translation techniques in published Scripture versions. This book gives analytic insights to translators, researchers, or commentators on biblical poetry.

Book Description
Traditionally, the Psalms have been read in reference to their historical context. This publication suggests reading a psalm in its literary context and with reference to the editorial intent of its placement in the Psalter. The author proposes that such reading brings holistic richness in our understanding of the thematic patterns underscored in individual psalms. The study analyzes Psalm 145, a unique Davidic psalm, providing the reader with an in-depth understanding of the purpose of its placement.
