The study is part of a long-range program to obtain information pertinent to the analysis and design of concrete thin shell structures subjected to dynamic loads. A brief bibliography of some of the literature related to this subject is included. The remainder of the report is devoted to the theory of shallow shells. The equations governing the dynamic behavior of shallow shells are derived, and the Galerkin method is employed to obtain a solution for the free vibration of a clamped, elliptic paraboloid shell such as might be used to support the floors in a multistory building.
