Book Description
Excerpt from An Outline for the Study of Old Testament History The author has in places followed his Story of the Old Testament (smith Lamar, 1912) with out stating that fact. His indebtedness to all the Old Testament scholars whose works he has read is obvious and is hereby acknowledged. Long or frequent footnotes are out of place in a work of this kind. The author's thanks are due to Bishop Edwin D. Mouzon, to his colleagues, Professors Paul B. Kern and Ivan Lee Holt, and to Mrs. Frank Seay for care ful reading of the manuscript and for valuable sug gestions. Frank seay. Book Description
Excerpt from Outlines of Old Testament History: Progressive Grade, With Written-Answer Questions for the Older Classes This Outline of Old Testament History has been prepared in the hope that it may be found useful in giving a clear conception of the progress of events connected with the history of the chosen people. One of the most important questions in the preparation of such an outline is whether the lessons shall be extended over two or more years, or be condensed into a single year. At first thought the larger number of lessons may seem preferable because they give time for a more careful study of details. But in outline study it is of the first importance not to dwell on details, for otherwise the outlines are lost in a maze of subordinate incidents. Such has been the experience of multitudes in the study of the Old Testament. The principal thing to be sought in such study is a comprehensive survey of the whole history, and the smaller the number of lessons in which this can be done the better. The details may be studied later as occasion arises. A careful analysis of Old Testament history shows that it can readily be treated in about forty topics, each repte senting a distinct forward step in the history. We regard it of primary importance that each of these topics or steps be covered by a single lesson and no more, so that the topic and its significance shall stand out clearly before the mind. These outlines have been arranged in accordance with this principle. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Outlines of an Introduction to the Old Testament These Outlines are the outgrowth of fifteen years of study and teaching. They are designed simply to indicate the lines along which study is demanded if one is to understand the teachings of the Old Testa ment. NO effort has been made to present an exhaust ive review of the ideas which have been advanced by others in regard to these remarkable books, or to give completeness to the views of the author. Only such points as seem necessary to a correct understanding of the text are presented and these are stated in the briefest form, with such references as may guide the way to further study. If the position here taken seem conservative, it is not because the writer has ignored the later criticism or underestimates its value, but because the newer ideas do not seem to be sufficiently established to demand the abandonment of the older. Great gain has already come from the learned and laborious investigations of the new school of criticism and we hope for still richer fruitage in the future, but the results thus far secured are too vague to become a satisfactory basis for the interpretation of Scripture. Book Description
Excerpt from Outlines of New Testament History The present is a companion volume to the Outlines of Jewish History published some months ago. It deals with the historical data supplied by the inspired writings of the New Testament, in exactly the same manner as the pre ceding work did with the various events recorded in the sacred books of the Old Testament. In both volumes the writer has pursued the same purpose and followed the same methods. Both works have been prepared for the special use of theological students, not, however, without the hope that they may prove serviceable to a much larger number of readers, such as teachers of Bible history in Sunday-schools, colleges, academies, and the like. In neither volume has it been the aim of the writer to supply a substitute for the Bible itself, but rather a help towards a more careful perusal of the inspired record. With this purpose in view, he has set forth such results of modern investigation as may render the sacred narrative more intelligible and attractive. Many of the difficulties which are daily being raised on historical grounds are also touched upon, and the biblical student is supplied with constant references to further sources of in formation.
