Cadence is a comprehensive examination of how formal units in European art music of the tonal era achieve closure. The Chopin Preludes, Op 28, Op 45, and one without an opus number, form one of the major works of the Romantic period. The analysis of these Preludes affords the pianist an insight into the mind and genius of Chopin. Without an understanding of how the Preludes are constructed, the pianist cannot perform them according to the composer's intent. For many pianists, learning all the Preludes poses an impossible task. However, when they are reduced to a manageable simplicity by means of outlining, paraphrasing, and minimizing, the 'big picture' will be seen and learning will take place more quickly and securely. Memorizing note-by-note is surely the most inefficient and time-consuming methods of learning the Preludes. Without an alternate method of learning quickly, the pianist will spend hour after hour in mindless repetition until the Preludes are 'memorized'.
