Book Description
Excerpt from Aucassin Nicolette: Translated From the Old French the Old French The most lyric and lovely of early French romances is preserved to us by a single copy in the National Library of Paris. Without that one ill-written manuscript the world would have been poorer by how exquisite a dream 1 Had not this unique bloom remained, it would have been impossible to imagine that so rare and delicate a flower could have sprung in the unsheltered fields of mediaeval France. Book Description
Excerpt from Guillaume De Dole: An Unpublished Old French Romance In an introduction of thirty verses the author dedicates his poem to Miles de Nantheuil (of whom later) and asserts his claim to being the first to intercalate chansons in such a work, an invention in which he boasts of having so happily succeeded in making the songs suit the circumstances they are intended to embellish, that they could readily be thought to be of his own composition. In the present analysis no attempt will be made to indicate these frequently recurring intercalations, which lend so graceful a charm and so pleasing a variety to the simple nar rative which follows. Book Description
Excerpt from Classic French Course in English In one word, the single inspiring aim of the author has here been to furnish enlightened readers, versed only in the English language, the means of acquiring, through the me dium of their vernacular, some proportioned, trustworthy, and effective knowledge and appreciation, in its chief classics, of the great literature which has been written in French. This object has been sought, not through narrative and de scription, making books and authors the subject, but through the literature itself, in specimen extracts illuminated by the necessary explanation and criticism. Book Description
Excerpt from A Short Introduction, to the Study of French Literature "Literature," say M. de Bonald, "is the expression of society." Napoleon I. could not separate literature from the life (as a whole) of peoples: their books he found "magnanimes quand le peuple est grand; vicieux, frivoles ou insenses quand il se corrompt et s'abaisse." Lamartine says of peoples: "Their memory begins with their literature." For Lemercier literature is the all-in-all, in which and from which and into which all is, comes, goes. Voltaire said: "les feuilles volantes sont la perte de la litterature." Guizot thinks that plastically and aesthetically modern letters are inferior to the old, superior as regards sentiments, profundity, and deep-set ideas. I have quoted these Frenchmen in the forefront of my Notes, as they give in their own incomparable way what we can only express as strangers, less well and, to the French, outlandishly. They have been cited, too, in their prose (original or translated). French prose, to many of us foreigners (i.e., non-French), is exquisite, nearly always. French verse generally pleases us less, often very much less. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Richeut: Old French Poem of the Twelfth Century, With Introduction, Notes and Glossary Since Henry II was besieging Toulouse in 1159 and this seems to be the only event to which these verses could refer the question would appear to be settled. However, it has been suggested to me that the relation of the poem to the Roman de Renart may be an objection to this date. Let us examine this supposed relation.
