Book Description
RFX is a plasma physics experiment which aims to provide substantial progress in understanding the properties of the reversed field pinch (RFP) configuration in confining high b plasmas. With European funding, a large toroidal device was built in Padua, Northern Italy. Through a collaboration with Istituto Gas Ionizzati in Italy, University College Cork has responsibility for the implementation of a multichord polarimeter which will, for the first time, provide information on the internal magnetic field configuration in RFX. A single-chord polarimeter has been successfully implemented on RFX, as a pilot experiment, and work is currently underway for the completion of the six-chord diagnostic. This thesis describes the most recent work undertaken in preparation for the implementation of the six-chord polarimeter. A polarimetric diagnostic produces a measurement of the Faraday rotation angle which is proportional to the line integral of the product of the electron density and the local magnetic field profile along the line of the probing beam. Therefore, to obtain the poloidal magnetic field profile from the polarimetric measurement, an inversion process is needed to transform the integral values to the local values. This thesis presents an optimised method for reconstructing the poloidal magnetic field profile from a six-chord measurement of the Faraday rotation angle. The thesis outlines the various improvements which have been made to the previous inversion algorithm. The new algorithm has been tested for a variety of plasma conditions and the results are presented and discussed in the thesis. The effects of Faraday rotation measurement errors on the reconstruction capability of the magnetic field profile are also considered. Implementation of the new inversion algorithm will provide more accurate information on the magnetic configuration of RFX than would previously have been possible.

Nuclear Fusion
Author: C.M. Braams
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 9781420033786
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 352
Book Description
Fusion research started over half a century ago. Although the task remains unfinished, the end of the road could be in sight if society makes the right decisions. Nuclear Fusion: Half a Century of Magnetic Confinement Fusion Research is a careful, scholarly account of the course of fusion energy research over the past fifty years. The authors outline the different paths followed by fusion research from initial ignorance to present understanding. They explore why a particular scheme would not work and why it was more profitable to concentrate on the mainstream tokamak development. The book features descriptive sections, in-depth explanations of certain physical and technical issues, scientific terms, and an extensive glossary that explains relevant abbreviations and acronyms.

Stellarator and Heliotron Devices
Author: Masahiro Wakatani
Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA
ISBN: 9780195078312
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 462
Book Description
This monograph describes plasma physics for magnetic confinement of high temperature plasmas in nonaxisymmetric toroidal magnetic fields or stellarators. The techniques are aimed at controlling nuclear fusion for continuous energy production. While the focus is on the nonaxisymmetric toroidal field, or heliotron, developed at Kyoto University, the physics applies equally to other stellarators and axisymmetric tokamaks. The author covers all aspects of magnetic confinement, formation of magnetic surfaces, magnetohydrodynamic equilibrium and stability, single charged particle confinement, neoclassical transport and plasma heating. He also reviews recent experiments and the prospects for the next generation of devices.
