Excerpt from An Idyl From Nantucket It is about the cleanest bit of land, so far as the white man is concerned, we know of on this planet, and was first settled about the year 1659, when a few families came over from the Puritan mainland to make a new home where they could be free from the yoke which had grown heavy there, and live their own life in their own way. Book Description
Excerpt from A Summer Idyl In offering this simple little pastoral I have to con fess that I have been guided by no controlling motive, governed by no design. Possibly I shall be censured for this - for letting my pen take its own course, my own eyes curious as to how it would come out. I can only plead my helplessness to do otherwise, preferring the instinct, so to speak, of my pen rather than the uncertain guidance of an unpracticed hand. On the whole, I cannot say that it is an expression of myself, save that my pen savors of myself without conscious direction. It is more an entity in and of itself, my part being that of a wholly impersonal agent. If design could be said to have entered into it, it was that the story should be a very crystal for purity, underlaid by that deep reverence for Deity which of itself should safeguard my hand from any thing which could be construed to dishonor my God. Proceeding upon this basis, the story has been allowed to develop naturally, the parts growing into their several relations unassisted by artifice or con scious art. Book Description
Excerpt from An Idyl of the South, Vol. 1 of 2 In "An Idyl of the South" I have aimed to tell the story of an Octoroon. Her life discloses a type. My readers will form their own conclusions of the sociological conditions suggested by the narrative. It were better to think over some things in silence than to discuss them openly. The story is true to the life. It strikes at the root of certain conditions which have been thrust upon us by the humiliating consequences of Slavery. Some complications in the social order, obtaining in the development of the South before the War, are exceedingly interesting from our present viewpoint, instructed as we are by the larger observations and experiences of a more enlightened civilization. I hope to deal with certain new phases of the subject in a work which is to follow this volume. The eventualities of Emancipation and Reconstruction are upon us for consideration, and some deep and grave matters cannot be thrust aside as trivial things. The reckoning must come. Book Description
Excerpt from An Idyl: Some Sermons and a Song The myriad hearts of men, for that they see, Or think they see, at eve the morrow's east Dance with the splendor of the risen king, Who slept against the night. Not so the sick, Who scarce can hope five heavy breaths to draw. These dread the dark, impatient cry the dawn, TO travel to the land of mystery, Their path lit by the lamp God set in Heaven. For death, like other beasts men reckon foes. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
