Alcohol and drug addiction ruin the life of the suffer and their family members. The need for long-term treatment leaves many individuals living in sober houses with the hope of reintegrating back into society. Research shows that one crucial factor for long-term abstinence is employment (Scorzelli, 2007). This exploratory study examined two sober living houses with a survey to explore the participants’ work environments in order to determine the protective and risk factors that influence lengths of abstinence. Using a qualitative method, the questionnaire focused on the participants’ protective and risk factors to include the residents’ experience of their travel environment (going to and from work), relationship to the co-workers and managers, and their perception on how these environments influence their length of abstinence and self-worth. The purpose of this study was to explore the factors that influence sober living resident’s length of abstinence in order to answer the question, “do clients who suffer from substance use disorder have longer periods of abstinence when they are employed while living at a sober house?” The research provided can guide further research, using generalizable samples, to identify the predictors of longer lengths of abstinence and stable employment for people recovering from SUDs.

This is an exploratory, qualitative study of homeless, recovering alcoholics and the problems they encounter maintaining sobriety. Using semi-structured interviews, I analyze the experiences of ten men in their forties, who are in a recovery program designed for homeless men. I ask them how they stay sober without a place to live. Three kinds of problems are inferred from their narrative histories. First, the men have difficulty identifying as alcoholics. They have trouble fully integrating into the AA program. Second, the men struggle to form relationships with others, especially with a sponsor. Third, the process of "working the steps" is adapted complexly, more than in a normal twelve-step setting. The findings indicate that homeless men face special barriers to achieving and maintaining sobriety. I conclude by discussing the larger implications for sobriety, homelessness and social change within this community.

Research on treatment outcome for addictive disorders indicates that a variety of interventions are effective.
