Book Description
Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS)* at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dis semination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 39 (thesis year 1994) a total of 13,953 thesis titles from 21 Canadian and 159 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this impor tant annual reference work. While Volume 39 reports theses submitted in 1994, on occasion, certain uni versities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Book Description
The primary objective of this research was to experimentally validate the performance of the flares and find an optimal geometry. A computational model of the 50cm jet was used by was Tao Geng to investigate the fundamental principle and operation of a pulsejet with flares. He obtained results that noticed a significant increase in thrust for a particular Area Ratio (AR) and decreased as Area Ratio (AR) increased. This particular Area Ratio (AR = 2) of flare (Optimum) was greater than that of the Hobby Scale Jet, which had an Area Ratio of 1.4. Flares with various Area Ratios (AR = 2,1.4,3.24 and 1) were machined as attachments, which would fit onto the pulsejet, for investigation. Thrust, combustion chamber pressure and Thrust Specific Fuel Consumption (TSFC) were measured for all the cases and compared to the values for the Hobby Scale Pulsejet, to ascertain performance variations. Also experiments were done which included development of a reliable method of thrust measurement and implementation of this method for the augmenter studies on the 50cm pulsejet. Finally development of an unconventional conceptual pulsejet (based on Helmholtz Resonator) and operation of a 1 meter Valved Pulsejet is pursued.

Book Description
An experimental 8 cm pulsejet was developed using scaling laws from research on both 50 and 15 cm pulsejets. The 8 cm jet operates in three different inlet configurations--conventional, perpendicular, and rearward. The rearward configuration features inlets facing in the opposite direction of the flight path and develops the maximum net thrust. Using a high frequency pressure transducer, the operational frequency of the pulsejet was obtained by monitoring the combustion chamber pressure. It was found that in the rearward configuration, the operational frequency of the jet decreases with increasing inlet length. In addition, the combustion chamber peak pressure rise per cycle increases significantly if the exhaust diameter is reduced. Using information from the 8 cm pulsejet, a 4.5 cm pulsejet was developed and is operational.

Book Description
An experimental investigation of pressure-gain combustion for gas turbine application is described. The test article consists of an off-the-shelf valved pulsejet, and an optimized ejector, both housed within a shroud. The combination forms an effective can combustor across which there is a modest total pressure rise rather than the usual loss found in conventional combustors. Although the concept of using a pulsejet to affect semi-constant volume (i.e., pressure-gain) combustion is not new, that of combining it with a well designed ejector to efficiently mix the bypass flow is. The result is a device which to date has demonstrated an overall pressure rise of approximately 3.5 percent at an overall temperature ratio commensurate with modern gas turbines. This pressure ratio is substantially higher than what has been previously reported in pulsejet-based combustion experiments. Flow non-uniformities in the downstream portion of the device are also shown to be substantially reduced compared to those within the pulsejet itself. The standard deviation of total pressure fluctuations, measured just downstream of the ejector was only 5.0 percent of the mean. This smoothing aspect of the device is critical to turbomachinery applications since turbine performance is, in general, negatively affected by flow non-uniformities and unsteadiness. The experimental rig will be described and details of the performance measurements will be presented. Analyses showing the thermodynamic benefits from this level of pressure-gain performance in a gas turbine will also be assessed for several engine types. Issues regarding practical development of such a device are discussed, as are potential emissions reductions resulting from the rich burning nature of the pulsejet and the rapid mixing (quenching) associated with unsteady ejectors.
