It is from the heart we speak, and not from the head, or else we speak after others [what we have learnt from others, and so, like parrots]. Niets taal verwoestender, niets verderflijker voor den mensch kan zijn, dan de taal-zelve, die in de nitspraak hestaat en in geeoe letterteekenen, naar einige ingevoerde of aangenomen spelling te willen richten. De regel der spelllng is een: "Spel gelijk gij spreekt," en het was voor eene beneden het beestelijke afgezonken domheid bewaard, dit om te keeren en de spelling tot regel der uit spraak te nemen. Nothing more destructive to the true nature of language, nothing more pernicious to that characteristic distinction of mankind, than to think to regulate our speech (which consists in its utterance, and in no contrivance of letter) according to any artificially intruded and presumptive form of spelling. There is but one rule for spelling: "Spell as you speak;" and it remained for a degree of stupidity, below even that of the beast of the field, to reverse this rule and to take spelling for the standard of our utterance. Of the etymology of the term Pnov can, I have found no ttace in any work known to me; but take it to be as the Dutch phrase procca werpe (1. E. V and so are a same aspirate, and, when pronounced continuously, ashore, a same sound. F, v, and p, also interchange in use; fife and pipe are a same word, and so are the Dutch viggbo, bigghe, pigghe, and our pig. Er prosce werpe [here experience teams] sounds a proverb [in French proverbe], of which proverbium h the Latinized form. So that if I am right in this view of the word, to develope or account for our proverbs, would be to develope or account for tried truths, truths produced by the general experience of society, consequently well own to all, and thus a task of no great urgency at least, if not a supererogatory concern altogether. It may be observed, that some of the phrases, accounted for in these pages as trav esties are to be bond in equivalent terms in other own?
