Book Description
Challenging mainstream architecture’s understandings of place, this book offers an illuminating clarification that allows the idea’s centrality, in all aspects of everyday design thinking, to be rediscovered or considered for the first time. Rigorous but not dense, practical but not trivialising, the book unfolds on three fronts. First, it clearly frames the pertinent aspects of topology—the philosophy of place—importantly differentiating two concepts that architecture regularly conflates: place and space. Second, it rejects the ubiquitous notion that architecture “makes place” and, instead, reasons that place is what makes architecture and the built environment possible; that place “calls” for and to architecture; and that architecture is thus invited to “listen” and respond. Finally, it turns to the matter of designing responses that result not just in more places of architecture (demanding little of design), nor merely in architecture with some “sense of place” (demanding little more), but, rising above those, responses that constitute an architecture of place (demanding the greatest vigilance but offering the utmost freedom). Opening up a term regarded as so common that its meaning is seldom considered, the author reveals the actual depth and richness of place, its innateness to architecture, and its essentiality to practitioners, clients, educators, and students—including those in all spatial disciplines.

Book Description
The 20th century's avant-gardes as seen through invites, postcards and various inventive forms of printed communication, from Oskar Schlemmer to Nam June Paik The Archiv der Avantgarden in Dresden contains approximately 1.5 million items of ephemera from the 20th-century avant-gardes. Much of this material involves internal communications from within the art world, such as invitations to events and advertisements for exhibits. Invitation: Archive as Eventcompiles a wide selection of these communications, from a photocopied collage advertising Charlotte Moorman and Nam June Paik's Mixed Media Operato Oskar Schlemmer's handwritten pink postcard inquiring about a gallery show presented by Walter Dexel. Still more event descriptions, case studies, interviews and visual references provide a compelling history of aesthetic trends in graphic design as well as insight into the myriad ways in which artists promoted their own work. Invitation: Archive as Eventprovides an archive-driven take on the social circles and institutions that drove the evolution of contemporary art throughout the 20th century. It provides important sources for scholars, students, artists and curators in the development of a lively and participatory archival model.

Book Description
This book is about appreciation; it is an attempt to explain what architecture essentially is, rather than merely what it looks like. Architecture an Inspiration is addressed to those who enjoy buildings, cities and landscapes, and would like to have a deeper appreciation and a basis for their likes and dislikes. A full appreciation demands careful observation, and in these pages there are many explorations of this sort. The book is divided into two parts: the first is about the nature of architecture, describing what is necessary. The chapter headings define the basic requirements that, to varying degrees, must always be met, such as facilitating activity, moderating climate, relating to context, respecting materials and structure, as well as conveying meaning and delight. The second part is about the nature of designing and focuses on what the designer brings to the task to arrive at a human and poetic synthesis. These different ways of thinking are elusive and not necessarily conscious; they include the use of reason and intuition, the value of experience and precedent, the role of metaphor and the search for harmony. For students this is difficult, because there is no ‘right’ way of designing. So much of what is written about the architecture of today is negative that it seemed opportune to take a positive approach and point to work that is good – now and in the past – and reiterate some timeless qualities. Architecture an Inspiration does not set out to be comprehensive; Ivor Smith chooses examples that he finds particularly inspiring from the work of a few selected architects. The book will appeal to those both interested in and studying architecture.
