Excerpt from An Outline Analysis of the History of England (Revised) This Outline is a revision and enlargement of the An Outline Analysis of the History of England prepared by the writer for the use of his classes in English History at the Ohio State University in 1912. This won favor and the writer hopes that the following outline bringing the skeleton of the facts down to 1914 may be of some assistance to other teachers and students of English History. The purpose of the outline is not to provide a general summary of the facts, but merely a scheme of organization to suggest to the student what topics to emphasize in his reading and to teach him to-distinguish between essentials and non-essentials. Hence the facts are not usually stated, but the student is left to work them out from his readings in text books and reference books. It is assumed that the student will read thoroughly a good college text-book of English History such as Cross, History of England and Greater Britain, or Tout, Advanced History of Great Britain. In addition to the text-book students should read part or all the references to other books. Where the numerals (l), (3) each precede a reference -to a different book, it is suggested that the student read any one reference. Such references as have been included in the Outline are not a complete bibliography, but merely suggestions for reading. Excerpt from An Outline History of English Literature The purpose and plan of this little book may easily be gathered from the introductory chapter. Only a few words of preface, therefore, are needed. As I conceive it, a history of English literature, however brief, should still be a history of English literature in fact as well as in name; and for a history something more is required than a list of authors and their books, and even than a chronologically-arranged collection of biographical sketches and critical appreciations. It is true that a nation's literature is made up of the works of individual writers, and that for the ordinary purposes of study these writers may be detached from their surroundings and treated separately. But we cannot get a history of such literature unless and until each one has been put into his place in the sequence of things and considered with reference to that great body of literary production of which his work must now be regarded as a part. A history of English literature, then, must be interested primarily in English literature as a whole. Its chief aim should be to give a clear and systematic account, not of the achievements of successive great writers merely, as such, but of national changes and development. This does not imply neglect of the personal factor. On the contrary, it brings the personal factor into relief; for if each writer is to be considered with reference to literature as a whole, one main subject of enquiry must be the nature and value of his particular contribution to that whole. Excerpt from Chronological Outlines of English Literature The need of tolerably full Annals of English Literature is frequently felt by lecturers and by private students. They often require a colourless outline within which details may be placed, and which may serve to bring into prominence the chronological relations of the facts they deal with. No work hitherto published can be said to occupy, with regard to our literary history, the same position which an ordinary date book does with regard to our political history. The present volume aims at supplying this want. It is divided into two parts. Part I. brings the Annals of English Literature into connection with general European literature and with history, so that a glance enables us to see the position that a given work occupies in the line of development.
