Book Description
Excerpt from Address Delivered Before the New York County Medical Society: January 29, 1861 It was not until the year 1844 that all restraints were removed from the practice of physio and surgery in our State, and the necessity of either education, degree, or license, swept off with one fell swoop. Ao cording to that act, no person shall be liable to any criminal prosecution, or to indictment, for practising physic or surgery without a license, except in cases of mal-practice, or gross ignorance, or immoral conduct in such practice. The immediate effect of this law was to disgust some, and discourage others, while the majority of those who commenced practice subse quently to the passage of that act availed themselves of the freedom from all restraint which it afforded them, and neglected to avail themselves of the rights and privileges which a connection with this society would have given them. While, therefore, but very few recruits have replenished our ranks, constantly being thinned by removals from the city, and still more by the ever busy hand of death, our list now embraces but a comparatively small portion of those now engaged in the active duties of our calling, and numbers not more than one quarter of what it did in 1843, with probably double the number of educated practitioners in our city at the present time. Hoosiers and the American Story
Author: Madison, James H.
Publisher: Indiana Historical Society
ISBN: 0871953633
Category : Juvenile Nonfiction
Languages : en
Pages : 359
Book Description
A supplemental textbook for middle and high school students, Hoosiers and the American Story provides intimate views of individuals and places in Indiana set within themes from American history. During the frontier days when Americans battled with and exiled native peoples from the East, Indiana was on the leading edge of America’s westward expansion. As waves of immigrants swept across the Appalachians and eastern waterways, Indiana became established as both a crossroads and as a vital part of Middle America. Indiana’s stories illuminate the history of American agriculture, wars, industrialization, ethnic conflicts, technological improvements, political battles, transportation networks, economic shifts, social welfare initiatives, and more. In so doing, they elucidate large national issues so that students can relate personally to the ideas and events that comprise American history. At the same time, the stories shed light on what it means to be a Hoosier, today and in the past.

Millard Fillmore
Author: Robert J. Scarry
Publisher: McFarland
ISBN: 0786443405
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 433
Book Description
From the time he left office in 1853, President Millard Fillmore has become increasingly shrouded in mystery and stereotyped by anecdotes with slender connections to facts. The real Fillmore was not the weak and boring figurehead many Americans believe he was. This account of Fillmore's life is drawn largely from his family's personal papers, many of which have previously been suppressed or were unavailable or believed lost. It presents Fillmore as his own letters do, and as his friends, family members, and contemporaries saw him, as a distinguished and honorable man who was also a strong and effective president. This comprehensive work includes photographs, a genealogy of the Fillmore family, a chronology, a bibliography, and an index.
