Book Description
Excerpt from American Wild Flowers in Their Native Haunts The botanical and local descriptions accompanying the plates, have been furnished by the artist, Mr. E. Whitefield. The verses, begin ning She sleeps. Inserted in Love beyond the Grave, were presented for publication by a friend. With these exceptions, the author is alone responsible for every thing in the volume which has not the name of its writer affixed. To the friends who have assisted her in this undertaking, she would fain offer her heart-warm thanks. Of the high value of their aid, every intelligent reader can judge, but of the spontaneous kind ness with which that aid was afforded, this is not the place to speak, since it would be invading the rights and encroaching upon the privi leges of that friendship which claims to belong to social, even more than to literary life. It is only necessary to add that every thing contained in the volume was written expressly for it, with the exception of a few short poems, selected from the author's early writings, which after appearing under other Signatures, are now for the first time claimed. Book Description
Excerpt from Wild Flowers of the North American Mountains "When the book of life falls open at the page of spring," the snow-crowned mountains rule over an enchanting land of foliage, ferns and fungi, and the alpine meadows are ablaze with bright-hued flowers that grow luxuriantly beneath the broad blue tent of the sky. Held close in the curved arms of the cliffs, the patches of verdure, starred with these wondrous-tinted blossoms, are a revelation to the traveller. From the mountains of the Yukon and Alaska to the hills of Nova Scotia and New England, in the Rockies, the Selkirks and the mountain ranges of Montana, Dakota, Washington, Oregon, California and other States, you will find that the same miracle has been wrought. On the lower levels white-flowered, scarlet-fruited shrubs mingle with the Wintergreens, Larkspurs, Violets and Columbines; flaming Indian Paint Brushes, Gentians, Queen-cups and purple Vetches cover many a slope; here a valley is carpeted with yellow Lilies, Gaillardias, Arnicas and Golden-rods - a glorious Field-of-the-Cloth-of-Gold - and there some mossy plateau is gay with arctic-alpine Androsaces, Stonecrops, Everlastings and the trailing vines of the sweet-scented Northern Twin-flowers; while in the crannies among the rocks Moss Campions, Romanzoflias and Saxifrages find a foothold; and down beside the ice-born streams grow beds of Wild Parsley, Water Willow Herb, Musk Flower, Lobelia and Ladies' Tresses. Book Description
Excerpt from Wild Flowers Lo! The herds have abandoned their flocks beloved, The wise'men have journeyed from'distant parts, TO proffer their incense, gold, and myrrh, Whilst we have naught but our sin-stained hearts. Oh, these sin-stained hearts! We pause in distress; Our hope'and joy for a while are chilled'; But anon we picture the Babe's sweet eyes Our courage revives, our fears are stilled. For the heart that is sad with remembered sin, The heart that is weary and sore oppressed, Or the poor heart crushed with some untold pain, May be just the heart that the Child loves best. Anon we will pass through the cold, drear night TO the stable blest, our homage to pay, And there will we kneel at the manger's side, In a thrill of delight, till the dawn Of day.
