Book Description
This summary report addresses the information needs of American citizens, institutions, schools, industry, and government within the context of three themes: literacy, democracy, and productivity. The report includes a preamble, which provides background information on the conference; discussions of the challenges posed by the Information Age in each of the three theme areas; a summary of the highlights of the delegates' recommendations; and the 15 recommendations earmarked for priority action by an early vote of the conference delegates. The recommendations cover the following issues: availability and access to information; national information policies; information networks through technology; structure and governance; services for diverse needs; training to reach end users; personnel and staff development; preservation of information; and marketing to communities. It is suggested that these initiatives collectively provide a blueprint for ways in which the United States can move from a nation at risk to a nation of students and restore our international preeminence in commerce, industry, science, and technological innovation. Also included in the report are the mission statement of the White House Conference (excerpted from Public Law 100-382 and the following appendixes: (1) summary of the conference process; (2) geographic overview of delegate representation; (3) the 95 recommendations and petitions adopted by the delegates together with an index to the recommendations; (4) a list of conference advisory committee members; (5) a list of National Commission on Libraries and Information Science commissioners; (6) conference committee rosters; and (7) a list of conference delegates and alternates. Concluding the report are the names and titles of the White House Conference staff. (MAB)

A vital component of any academic institution, libraries are held to and expected to maintain certain standards. In order to meet these standards and better accommodate the student and faculty body they serve, many libraries are recognizing the benefit of forging relationships with other professional and academic entities. Space and Organizational Considerations in Academic Library Partnerships and Collaborations is a pivotal reference source for the latest scholarly research on and methods for utilizing existing spaces within libraries to facilitate collection development in addition to discussions on how on-campus and off-campus partnerships can assist in this endeavor. Focusing on issues related to faculty and researcher collaborations, collection management, and professional development, this book is ideally designed for administrators, librarians, academicians, MLIS students, and information professionals.

Book Description
These authors examine the unique social roles of libraries and museums, review historical precedents as well as library-museum partnerships funded in recent years through IMLS grants, and forge an exciting vision of a new library-museum hybrid. The juxtaposition of library collections and museum artifacts, they assert, has the potential to create authentic, interactive experiences for community members, and it can help establish a distinct, meaningful, and sustainable role for libraries. In the authors' words, libraries can then reassert themselves as places devoted to contemplation, wonder, knowledge acquisition, and critical inquiry. Commercialization, edutainment, and the library as a learning community are just some of the fascinating topics addressed as the authors explore the future's terrain, and suggest how libraries might situate themselves upon it. Libraries, museums, and the ways in which they are used by patrons have drastically changed in past decades. Digitization projects, infotainment, and the Internet are redefining the library's and the museum's roles in the community. What are the implications for the future of these institutions?
