Book Description
The sediment to a pH of 12 and maintain for 2 hours. The US EPA asserts that this method is at least 99% effective at reducing organisms in biosolids. The goal of this study was to determine if the use of alkaline stabilization reduces the amount of microorganisms in sediments obtained from a freshwater stream. Measurements of heterotrophic bacteria, total fungi, Bacillus cereus, Escherichia coli, and total coliforms were used to assess the effectiveness of alkaline stabilization of sediments. It was determined that the amount of microorganisms in the sediment after treatment with hydrated lime and lime kiln dust was reduced, but the decrease was not 99% for all the indicator organisms as predicted by the US EPA guidance for biosolids. Heterotrophs, E. coli, and total coliforms were reduced by greater than 99%, but fungi were only reduced 86.5% and the opportunistic pathogen Bacillus cereus was only reduced by 75%.

Book Description
Assessment of freshwater sediments can determine whether chemical concentrations are sufficient to cause adverse effects on aquatic organisms or organisms higher in the food chain, including humans. This book presents methods for assessing sediments and includes an integration of physical, chemical, and biological information. It examines the elements of quality assurance and control programs, considerations for the conduct of field surveys, screening-level analyses, chemical analyses, toxicity tests for assessing biological impacts, assessments of benthic invertebrate community structure, surveys of fish tumors and abnormalities, and data presentation and interpretation techniques.

Book Description
Low Carbon Stabilization and Solidification of Hazardous Wastes details sustainable and low-carbon treatments for addressing environmental pollution problems, critically reviewing low-carbon stabilization/solidification technologies. This book presents the latest state-of-the-art knowledge of low-carbon stabilization/solidification technologies to provide cost-effective sustainable solutions for real-life environmental problems related to hazardous wastes including contaminated sediments. As stabilization/solidification is one of the most widely used waste remediation methods for its versatility, fast implementation and final treatment of hazardous waste treatment, it is imperative that those working in this field follow the most recent developments. Low Carbon Stabilization and Solidification of Hazardous Wastes is a necessary read for academics, postgraduates, researchers and engineers in the field of environmental science and engineering, waste management, and soil science, who need to keep up to date with the most recent advances in low-carbon technologies. This audience will develop a better understanding of these low-carbon mechanisms and advanced characterization technologies, fostering the future development of low-carbon technologies and the actualization of green and sustainable remediation. - Focuses on stabilization/solidification for environmental remediation, as one of the most widely used environmental remediation technologies in field-scale applications - Details the most advanced and up-to-date low-carbon sustainable technologies necessary to guide future research and sustainable development - Provides comprehensive coverage of low-carbon solutions for treating a variety of hazardous wastes as well as contaminated soil and sediment

Book Description
Algae Abstracts is the first in a series of bibliographies on water re sources and pollution published by IFI/ Plenum Data Corporation in cooperation with the Water Resources Scientific Information Center (WRSIC). It is produced wholly from the information base compris ing material abstracted and indexed for Selected Water Resources Abstracts. The bibliography is divided into volumes according to the publication dates of the source documents. Volume 1 contains 569 abstracts cov ering publication dates up to and including 1969; Volume 2 contains 730 abstracts covering the years 1970 to 1972. The material included in this bibliography represents computer selections based on the presence of a form of the word "alga" somewhere in the referenced citation. Substantively, the material typifies WRSIC's "centers of com petence" approach to information support of the Office of Water Re sources Research (OWRR) of the Department of the Interior. Most of the references in this bibliography are the work of the center of competence on eutrophication at the University of Wisconsin. The indexes refer to the WRSIC accession number, which follows each abstract. The Significant Descriptor Index is made up of a fraction of the total descriptors and identifiers by which each paper has been indexed. It represents weighted terms that best describe the informa tion content; this status is indicated by the asterisks which precede them. The General Index includes all the remaining descriptors and identifiers by which each paper in this bibliography has been indexed.

Book Description
Quartz, zeolites, gemstones, perovskite type oxides, ferrite, carbon allotropes, complex coordinated compounds and many more -- all products now being produced using hydrothermal technology. Handbook of Hydrothermal Technology brings together the latest techniques in this rapidly advancing field in one exceptionally useful, long-needed volume. The handbook provides a single source for understanding how aqueous solvents or mineralizers work under temperature and pressure to dissolve and recrystallize normally insoluble materials, and decompose or recycle any waste material. The result, as the authors show in the book, is technologically the most efficient method in crystal growth, materials processing, and waste treatment. The book gives scientists and technologists an overview of the entire subject including: À Evolution of the technology from geology to widespread industrial use. À Descriptions of equipment used in the process and how it works.À Problems involved with the growth of crystals, processing of technological materials, environmental and safety issues.À Analysis of the direction of today's technology. In addition, readers get a close look at the hydrothermal synthesis of zeolites, fluorides, sulfides, tungstates, and molybdates, as well as native elements and simple oxides. Delving into the commercial production of various types, the authors clarify the effects of temperature, pressure, solvents, and various other chemical components on the hydrothermal processes. - Gives an overview of the evolution of Hydrothermal Technology from geology to widespread industrial use - Describes the equipment used in the process and how it works - Discusses problems involved with the growth of crystals, processing of technological materials, and environmental and safety issues
