Book Description
Excerpt from Agricultural Conditions in Southern New York Fig. 2. - View showing the general topography of the land on the hilltops of southern New York. Chemung, Tompkins, Tioga, Cortland, Broome, Chenango, Otsego, and southern Madison to Schoharie and Albany counties. The parts of this area which are in the condition described constitute but a small proportion of its total acreage. Many of the best farms of the State are located in these counties. Although their local topography varies somewhat, in general it is the same. Feeble glaciation has left high, rather steep hills, on the tops of which there are often considerable areas of fairly level to rolling lands. The water flow of many-years has cut frequent and more or less deep valleys, usually running north and south. Thus it will be seen that the whole area is very much broken in its general outline. The land on the top of the hills (fig. 2) was cleared of timber from Sixty to one hundred years ago, depending somewhat on the locality. Book Description
Excerpt from Southern Agriculture The growth of wild plants is determined by two sets of factors, those connected with the soil and those connected with the climate. Cultivated plants are also subject to these same conditions except in So far as these may be modified by human effort. Cultivation is the collective name for all those pro cesses by which man seeks to alter these environ mental conditions, thus making them more favorable for his crops. It is easier to modify soil conditions than climatic conditions, hence the climate of any region must always profoundly influence its agri culture. Climate depends On the two factors of temperature and humidity. A climate may be hot or cold, wet or dry, and the kinds of crops that can be grown will vary accordingly. These factors depend in turn on three others, - latitude, altitude, and topographv. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Address Delivered Before the N. Y. State Agricultural Society, by John A. Dix, at Albany, October 7, 1859 This whole subject has been treated with great ability by Mr. John Jay, of the city of New York, in an address on the Statistics of American Agri culture before the American Geographical and Statistical Society; and I shall draw largely from the materials collected by him in support of the proposition I have stated. Book Description
Excerpt from New York State Colleges of Agriculture and Home Economics The Farm Bureau grew out of the common need of farmers for organization for educational and social purposes. The Farm Bureau Exchange has grown out of the equally common need of farmers for organization for business purposes. While the purposes of the two organizations are different, the ends sought are not entirely dissimilar, one of the most important objects of one being to reduce the cost of production of products on the farm and of the other to reduce the cost of distribution of products to and from the farm. The Farm Bureau, through its branch centers located in the different parts of a county, has become a great ferum for the discussion of the technical problems of production and of marketing and, at the same time, it has become an agency for the general improvement of/ conditions in the country. The Farm Bureau Exchange, on the other hand, assumes certain business responsibilities of buying better and cheaper farm supplies and of selling certain of the products of its members to better advantage than the grower can acting in his individual capacity.
