Book Description
Excerpt from Agnes, Vol. 1 of 3 Life thus taken up in its general course is, no doubt, full of broken threads and illogical con elusions, and lacks altogether the unity of the regularly constructed fiction, which confines itself to the graceful task of conducting two vir vtuous young persons through a labyrinth of difficulties to a happy marriage. I am far from despising the instinct which confines the art of story-telling within these limits, but think it, on the contrary, as wise as it is natural; yet at the same time everybody knows that there are many lives which only begin after that first fair chapter of youthful existence is com pleted as also that there are many more which end, so far as there is any interest or vitality in them, before the other great conclusion which finishes all, so far as human vision goes. I will not say that the following Story has been written to carry out such a theory, which would not be true. It has grown out of much more natural and less premeditated causes but that this theory is one which may justify the story; and as such I leave it in the reader's hands. Book Description
Excerpt from Agnes Sorel, an Historical Romance, Vol. 1 of 3 How strange the sensation would be, how marvellously interesting the scene, were we to wake up from some quiet night's rest, and find ourselves suddenly transported four or five hundred years back, living and moving amongst the men of a former age! To pass from the British fortress of Gibraltar, with drums and fifes, red coats and bayonets, in a few hours to the Coast of Africa, and find oneself surrounded by Moors and male petticoats, turbans and scymitars, is the greatest transition the world affords at present; but it is nothing to that of which I speak. Book Description
Excerpt from Agnes of the Bad Lands O aimlessly interwoven were the dark and nar row streets where Agnes lived that you could not reach Shady Court from any direction if you went straight. Was it because the frowsy men and slatternly women never went straight in the domain of morals that their feet staggered around blind corners and over uneven cobblestones with unerr ing certainty? Of the children that swarmed in the greasy gloom or played in the one hour's sunshine that streamed over high walls when the day was right, there was no record that any, even the young est Ou his legs, was ever lost. That would have been luck too good for Shady Court in the Bad Lands. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
